Default noob question: rattling

Hey, I installed 2 12" subs in my ls400 a while back.. i replaced the oem sub, the grille is still there.. i think the majority of the crappy rattling comes from that honeycombed grill where that oem sub was, my question is it safe to break that plastic that rattles and leave just the cloth there in the grill?

I did that with my GS... not rattling and no issues... i just peeled back the cloth, broke up the grill, reglued the cloth... thats it.
