Default definitive solution to es300 radio swap

The definitive ES300 radio replacement/swap thread.

I’m making this write-up so people can upgrade their stereo if need be. I have done this on a friend’s car yesterday. While searching for info on CL I could not find any relevant information. My friend has a 1997 ES300. He bought a stereo from a 2001 ES300. The radio plug on the 2001 ES300 radio is different and does not plug in. The plug that is used to control the changer, white plug, works no problem though.

To do the following install you will you will need the following parts:
Metra MET 70-8112 Toyota Amplified Sound System Harness
Metra MET 71-8113 2000-03 Toyota/Lexus Amplified systems into OEM Radio
2000-2003 Lexus ES300 Radio

The wiring is very simple for the most part. The 70-8112 harness will plug right onto the factory 1997 ES300 harness. The 71-8113 harness will plug right into the 2001 ES300 radio. This part is important!!! The 71-8113 harness does not have an illumination/dimmer wire in the plug. The radio will turn on and the screen will work but the radio buttons don’t light up when the parking lights/head lights are turned on.

This is how the MET 70-8112 harness looks.

This is how the MET 71-8113 harness looks .

To solve this issue you need to take a piece of wire and connect it to the green wire with a silver dot in the car side of the harness as follows. Green wire with silver dot is pin #2 and its in the top right corner of the plug.

The 71-8113 harness has extra pins in it for mute, beep, and other functions that are not used. Take out one of those wires. You will need to reuse one of those wires when re-pinning the harness.

This is how the harness looks when you get it in the package.

This is what where you need to put the pin for the illumination to work. Pin #2 location on the 71-8113 harness is empty and the Metra tech sheet lists it as N/A or not used/not available. You need to insert the wire with the pin into Pin#2 location. This is how it will look after you insert the wire.

This is the wiring tech sheet that comes with the 71-8113 harness. The pin #2 is listen as N/A.

After you insert the pin into location #2 you connect the wire to it that you earlier tagged to green wire in the original harness.

The 70-8112 harness that plugs into the 1997 ES300 harness comes with the rca connection for signal input on them. The 71-8113 harness that plugs into the 2001 ES300 radio comes with wires for signal input. To make this work you have to cut off the rca connections. The way the rca is made is it uses a positive signal wire in the middle with a negative ground/shield wound around it. You have to cut off the rca connector. After you do that you connect the inner wire, color for color, to the new harness. The ground of the rca can be connected to the ground of the radio.

This is how the 2001 es300 radio looks with the matching climate control unit.

Sorry for crappy pictures. I was using my friend’s camera since I was not at my house. I know this is not very clear at the moment but I have to go work on a friends supra and will edit this post with more info tomorrow after work.
If you have any more questions feel free to PM or email me.

Hey all, found this through Google searching. I got a 2001 stereo and am trying to put it in my 1997 Es300. I made the revisions as the thread says to do, however, I think the MET 71-8113 harness has changed as there is something in Pin 2.

However, my problem is that whenever I turn off the unit or the car, a loud thump happens in all speakers. It seems that the amp is turning off after the unit (or not at all). Other than that the stereo sounds fine. CD changer works, radio sounds good, etc. However, that thump is LOUD and noticeable.

I can't figure it out and it's driving me crazy! It's not a grounding issue (at least I don't think). I've checked all my grounds. Just hoping that someone has had the same problem as me. Thanks!

Default Ten Years After

Ten years later and I'm doing exactly this. Sure wish the photos were still active but this is really helpful.

I didn't see it anywhere in this thread, is there a tracing somewhere of wire colors to speakers?
