Default "Check hard disk" navi problem

I've done a search for this, and I haven't found a solution to it yet.

Story:

I was driving home today, and I noticed that my main navi screen turned off, and turned back on. The audio was working and everything, however, when I went into the navigation screen, it said "Check hard disk." What's even more weird is that when I removed the negative terminal off of the battery and put it back on, the navi somewhat worked. I could gain access to the destination options, but it would freeze, and an error would come up stating "check card" or something of the sort.

Someone PLEASE help, I don't want to end up going to a stealership and having to pay over $1k for a stupid card or hard drive.

So did you happen to fix the problem, i called my local dealership and its 260 for the update which i dont want to spend but i might have to. Someone said to remove the hard drive and try tapping and blowing in it like an old nintendo cartridge, i have a custom trunk so its going to be a pain to get in there you might want to try it and let me know if it works...

It seems like the OEM Nav hard drives last a long time, I still have my original one from 1998 and still works fine. So its a 10 year old drive.

The blow idea did not work. =[ However, I did take apart the navi console area, and unplugged, then replugged everything in. I can get the options and other menus to work, however, when I hit map guide, it gives me the same error. =[

Do you guys think an update is at hand?

This may sound simple...but did you check the nav disk?? I just replaced mine with the new 7.1 update and the old disk was somewhat scratched. May be just a cleaning issue...who knows. My way is try the simple stuff first. Tap and blow is a bad idea as any comp geek will tell you...ok I just admitted something. Dust off or whatever is better idea.

Good luck

I'm thinking of just replacing the navi with a AVIC-D3 But! I have to find someone who's willing to help me install it! >_<
