I just replaced my subwoofer on my LS 430 this weekend. I used a JL Audio 8W0-4 and it fit perfectly and did not require any modifications at all. I purchased the speaker at Tweeters for $89 and it sounds great.

Isn't the 8W0-4 designed for an enclosure and not free-air use?

I have no idea if it is designed for enclosure or not. I am not an expert on this stuff or a true audiophile, it sounds a whole lot better than the ML blown subwoofer I got the car with. it fit easily with no modification so I am satisfied. These are the specs on the 8W0-4 I pulled off the JL Audio site.

Thanks for your honest answer. I know JL has an older discontinued driver that is designed for usage outside of an enclosure. It is called the 8IB4/8IB8. They might be better sounding in the stock location and probably will drop in like the 8W0. I'm trying to find a pretty good sub that will just drop in my ES330 and not take up space in the trunk.

your ls430 mark levinson amp lists for 1300.00(used working 500.00) and no other mark levinson amp will replace it the radio tuner circuits go through the amp circuits unlike any other lexus amp so finding a replacement amp will be difficult if you overload it with aftwermarket sub.
. so when the 89.00 subwoofer toasts your amp its going to cost a lot more than a new mark sub costs to replace the amp. mismatched aftermarket speakers and lexus oem amps do not mix well. 2001 mark levinson amps had a defect to begin with and are all out of warranty now so replacing one is very expensive.
used 2001 mark levinson amps are very hard to find due to the 2001 defect which was the subject of a tsb in 2002. so i think attempts to use aftermarket subs are quite misguided except for those old jl free air subs.
the mark amps should last for many more years if the subwoofer outputs arnt overtaxed with aftermarket subs.

So either the JL Audio 8w0-4 ohm or 8W0-8 ohm will consider ok to replace the subwoofer of LS430 2001 ?

The only real way he could mess up the amplifier would be if he uses a subwoofer that has a impedance lower then the stock sub. I have no idea what impedance the stock LS430's sub is, the LS400 was 4ohms.

I wouldn't recommend using the 8 ohm sub, that may be too high an impedence. I haven't had any problems with the 8W0-4 that I put in. Another option is to send out your original ML sub to get re-foamed. I think this runs about 80 bucks.

I know your post is almost 3 years old but I'm hoping you might get this. I have a blown ML sun in my 01 LS430. Are you saying that the amp that is in there is the only amp that can possibly run off of the stock nav/ radio head unit? And so adding a new type of amp is not possible and adding new speakers will overload the amp? My option is to fix or buy another ML or find a discontinued JL? Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

Please do a search before dredging up old threads. This question has been answered a myriad of times. I know because I've answered many of them.

You cannot run an aftermarket amp directly from the nav head unit due to it being a CAN-bus system. The factory amp is also a DSP. It comes on with the deck, but has no remote turn on and it reads the digital signal, processes it, then amplifies it and sends it to the speakers. If you want to ditch everything, you can upgrade and put in a new deck with amps. If you want to retain the factory head and the amp is indeed blown, you'll need another factory amp - new or refurb, your choice. You can, once you replace the factory amp, use a number of products after it to feed into aftermarket amps for better quality sound and more power if you still want to replace all the speakers. No one said it would be cheap to own these cars, especially with the "advanced" sound systems they put in them.

If the surround has came apart from the basket, the best way to fix it is using hot glue to repair it. I did this to my 04 ml sub and it worked great.
