How big is your sub?
I'm in the market for a little bass action in my 06 GS, and I was wondering what people were using as I'm torn on 10 or 12. Tell me what you think and what you guys got. Thanks...

I'm a fan of "bigger is better". I'm still poking around the trunk of my wife's ES-350 and will probably end up putting a pair of 12's in it. More than likely in an IB since there is minimum sound deadening between the trunk and the rear seats.

One thing to note-- the sq with a "great quality" 12 will be close to that of a 10, and the biggest difference is really in the frequencies we don't even use subs at-- above 1khz is where the response is the most drastically different--
Plus, the power you put into the vc of a 10 will net you more output with the same speaker in a 12" size per watt-- sometimes almost 3db difference-- which is very noticeable--
Another thing to look at is linear xmax-- you can calculate the displacement of a sub and have a direct understanding of it's output just by knowing it's cone area and linear one-way travel--
Some of the industry leaders have 1 way xmax (excursion) of 30mm -- 1.2 inches in one direction-- that's a lot btw--
I have a Kappa Perfect 12.1, with a 14mm linear travel 1way, which was a lot at the time of their design release, and with 500w it's too loud for me in the trunk of an SC- it seems like you get a similar effect as with a hatch when you remove the stock sub due to the size of the trunk and the angle of the back glass-- very cool--
So that 12 is crazy loud for what it is and only being in a sealed box--
It's still very clean and tight and I would only step down to 10's if I ran two-- I'm thinking about running two sq10's in tiny boxes that don't take up any of my usable trunkspace-- That should be interesting-- maybe 3 would be better though--

A good example of excursion-- This sub will be as loud as 3 12's of some varieties-- but cleaner and tighter at the same time--

Big Bass Baby!
Im a really bad person to ask this... first setup was twenty four 12" and second "smaller" setup was six 15". I would say four 10" or three 12" would be great for a GS300. In the right enclosure you can keep the enclosure within the width of the strut towers.

I'll be running two 12's in my Lexus by next week. This will be the first time in 14 years that I will be running two 12's as opposed to just one. Hehe...
My Civic is running a 13.5" sub.

It's perfect for me - it's in a large box, 2.5 cu ft total, and ported, and tuned to 27 hz - really low tuning frequency... it sounds awesome...
I've had everything from 4 8" subs (won three bass comps with those) to a single 18" sub, to two tens, and I've tried some other combos in between... The 8's were the loudest, the 18 played the deepest, but, honestly, I'm happiest with the 13... it's a good mixture, relatively cheap, and it doesn't need a whole lot of power to sound good...
