strip the insulation from each of the 2 wires and separate them a little bit so u can work with them.

Also, where can an "iPod dock to RCA output cable" be purchased?

i used this:
www.pcmall.com item no. 7157556

Great job doing this and great pictures btw.
*two thumbs up*

I saw this in person at the meet. His installation was very clean. The sound was crisp. I can't wait to do this myself once I have time.

Good deal. Brings up my last question - from what I can see, this cable doesn't charge the IPod does it. O well.

no, i was unable to find any cable that did this and it seems that the only way i get it to charge would be if i made my own cable, which is a big project that i just dont want any part of

my ipod lasts a week on average on a full charge

I guess thats true if you have the output volume on it turned all the way down with the setup you've made. I think I've fried my battery on it from using it soo much and always having it plugged in. Mine lasts for ~3 hours volume 2/4 to 3/4.

output volume will make no difference since the sound u pull from the ipod is coming through the dock, meaning its preamp sound. thats why the volume on the ipod has no effect on the volume through the stereo.

Check out this cable @ http://www.autosound2000.com/ipodadapters.htm

audio/video and power hook-up for charging $29.95 (it's about half way down the page)

thats pretty much it, they have this one though which is even more better suited since we dont need video
IPOD-RCA CABLE ADAPTER
$24.99

but my iPod rarely leaves the car and a week is just enough time for me to bring it inside, charge it and reload all my podcasts

Oh, and the 3.5mm miniplug is an additional preamp output

So that's what the 3.5mm was for!

Now all we need is a schematic for an auto-sensing turn on ic to trigger a single
4pdt relay -- I'm looking into doing this with a transistor that will see the 25mv ~ or so from the ipod or other mp3 player being produced when the player is in between songs-- (otherwise it would auto-switch back to the changer betweens songs) --

I'll be measuring the output at full volume from the headphone jack during and between songs-- then choosing an appropriate value transistor to trigger a single 4pdt relay to make this whole process automatic--

I wouldn't even be attempting this whole switching setup, but after removing my cd changer and re-installing it several times it's decided to start working again mysteriously on it's own...

Keep up the good work-- I'm right behind ya-- though I wish I had an Ipod now instead of my Mrobe 500i -- it will only last about 6hrs before needing a charge-- and olympus hasn't released a car charger that I know about-- (that's just splitting hairs though)
