Question

i built some front speaker baffles to house my new 6 1/2" speakers. i must've gotten the specs wrong because the speaker hits the door panel.

it was built out of 1/2" MDF with a 1" spacer ring. should the spacer only be 1/2" (for a total baffle depth of 1") ?? The depth of the speaker is 2 13/16" and it seems like there is still some room between the window and magnet...

thanks.

1/2 inch baffle with 1 inch spacer is correct. This is for a speaker with less than 2 1/2 inch mounting depth. Which speaker are you using?

it is the Alpine 6 1/2" spr-175a. the mounting depth is 2 13/16" so will this not fit?

and for the baffle, i should cut out a 1/2" spacer and mount it to the 1/2" board for a total depth of 1", correct?

More than likely it will not fit. I've tried some MW170 Dynaudio speakers (3 inch mounting depth) and they needed way too much clearance. You can try the 1/2 MDF and 1/2 spacer combo but I'm pretty sure that the magnet will hit the window as it's coming down. The 1/2 MDF and 1 inch combo that I'm using works fine to a certain speaker depth...up to about 2 1/2 inches.

Default mounting depth for mw160 driver

Percy,
What is the mounting depth for the Dyn. MW160 driver? Would the 1/2 inch baffle and 1 inch spacer work? or would it be a really tight squeeze. I went to their site and they said it was 77 mm but that would be about 3 inch mounting depth which is the same as the 170 which I know shouldn't be right.

hmm. maybe i'm doing something wrong because with the 1/2" mdf and 1" spacer combo, the spacer still hits the door panel - even without a speaker... does your setup clear the door panel easily?

Do you have a picture of the setup? Maybe that'll help clear up things a bit.

ok percy, maybe this will help. i can't figure out why it doesn't fit! this pic is with a 1/2" mdf and 1/2" spacer. from the spacer, the lip and rubber of the speaker extends about 5/16". it is still hitting the door panel..

Core,

Try positioning the speaker a touch lower and trimming down the spacer ring to the exact diameter of the speaker. Be careful when cutting. Hopefully this will help a bit. Nice job of the baffle board though! My setup will hit the door slightly but I made sure that the speaker cone doesn't hit any part of the door.

thanks percy. i'll give that a shot. there seems to still be some room behind the magnet, so maybe i'll also cut down the spacer a bit more. if it still doesnt work, any suggestions on comparable speakers to these Alpines? i'll be pushing them with the Alpine MRD-F752 5ch amp. i'm not quite ready for Dynaudios yet...

Try looking into /a/d/s speakers. They're kinda pricey but they sound pretty good.

well, the Alpines just weren't gonna fit... mounting depth was too big. so i picked up some Boston Acoustics and they fit in perfectly! i even mounted the crossover to the back of the speaker baffle for a really tight setup. thanks again for your help percy. i'll post pics soon...
