Default 16K - Time for brakes? What kind of pads?

I have a 2014 F-sport. Brakes are getting spongy. Front brake pads need to be replaced? Any suggestions on type of brake pads to request? I'm not going to take it to the dealer I don't think. They quoted $348 for front pads. I'm going to take it to a 5 star rated local Japanese repair shop -- I'll call tomorrow to get pricing. But I do want to be somewhat knowledgeable -- I don't want to pay a lower price but get inferior pads. Should I get the backs done too? W ill the rotors be okay at 16K or should I expect to have those replaced?

Any info you can share would be great.

Thanks!

Do it on your own. It literally take 5 minutes for each pads.

But it sounds like you have a brake fluid problem, not pads.

You could be right but the dealership has indicated that it's the front pads. 5mm left. As far as doing it myself -- I don't have the tools, a garage, and the driveway is on a steep incline. Same with the street .

Minimum thickness for brake pads is 1mm, yours still have 40% life left.

+1

Sounds like a possibility of air in the lines.

Go with a semi-metallic brake pad as they come standard for your vehicle. Some aftermarket pads are much better than the OEM pads at a much lower cost and so there's a lot of benefits to going with aftermarket.
As others have mentioned here, the spongy pedal feel can be from air introduced into the brake lines and so you must bleed the system to get rid of the air. The cost is anywhere from $60-90. You can save cost here easily if you have a friend help out; check youtube for instructions for your particular vehicle.
Spongy pedal feel can also be from the brake pads needing to be changed as the pedal must travel further in order for the pads to contact the rotors.
You can have the rear pads inspected as the rear brake system is used the least but would not hurt to get them checked; the same for the rotors. Depending on your braking habits, your rotors condition could be fine at 16k.
Make sure to properly break-in the new brake pads. Either the mechanic can do this or you can. This involves heating up the brake pads and slow speed braking; all to ensure the brake pads interacts with the rotors cohesively.
Hope this helps and gives you a better idea of what you're getting into.

Thanks! A local shop with about 117 "5 star" reviews quoted me $155 using Posi Quiets. Anybody know if those are good?

Centric/Posi-Quiet is a sister brand of StopTech. They are indeed great pads and we highly recommend getting them. They are a step below the StopTech Street performance; which is for more aggressive applications. Hope that helps.

Agree with cquence - posiquiets are good pads.

I'm in Orange County - could you pm me the name of the shop you found? They sound pretty good.

Thanks

Had a really good experience at Japanese Auto Tech. Got it done in less time and for less money than quoted.
