Default Dealer scratched my wheel

Hey all,

So my dealer scratched my whole wheel while remounting the tire after patching the tire after it had a nail. My service associate noticed this when he cleaned the wheel after the person who did the work left a mess. So, they offered to repaint the wheel and everything. I am wondering how do these generally look like after being repainted? They have given me a loaner till they fix this, I am wondering how long do these repairs generally take as it has been a couple of days.

Thanks,

Alvin

Hey Alvin,

I had the same thing happen in January. My local dealership scratched my front rim. They called a 3rd party to come out and fix it, needless to say, the repair looked great. Good as new!

The actual prep, paint, and dry time is usually minimum 2 day process if properly done and not rushed in between coats. Then add any other inflight jobs that 3rd party has in the pipeline, delivery and so on, it can be easy 1 week.

Good luck!

alvin...Sorry to hear about your experience at the dealer. Personally, I would not accept a repair because while it may look OK after the repair, it will never have the durability of the factory finish. I know too many people who have had their wheels repaired and the pit/peal much easier and once the oxidization gets a hold of it, then it is all downhill from there.

Personally, I would ask for a new rim....

It depends on the size and location of the scratches.

I had a tires shop made a 1 inch wide scratch near the lip of the wheel and they called a mobile guy who came to house and prepped, painted, and clear coated the wheel within 30 minutes. And it looks great, can't tell it was even painted.

Now if they need to take the tire off and repaint the entire wheel, that could take about couple hours and a day to dry. And if they are doing this, always remember that 90% of the times the paint will not match the original color. This also happened to me when I was in an accident and the repair shop painted 2 wheels that were damaged and the color did not match the other two. So they ended up painting the other two to match it.

I bought the wheels insurance since I knew they would get scratched or bent from a pothole. Sure enough I curb rashed one pretty seriously. When I took the car in for the 5000 mile service I had it repaired. Looks as good as new....the repaired section looks the same, but feels slightly different if you run your hand over it. Really you would only know if you knew exactly where to look. Locally here in Utah they have a mobile contractor do it.

Yeah, I have been using a loaner since Thursday. I think they have an in house body shop that takes care of this. Lets see how it looks when I get the car back. The wheel was only scratched no loose metals or anything.

Here is a pic

They said they were going to repaint the whole thing and not just part of it. I have no idea when they are going to finish.

I recently curbed one of my rims. Thankfully it wasn't bent, just gouged. I coordinated the repair through my dealer (so I could get a loaner), though they, like many others, use a mobile repair guy. Understand these are not the best pics, but here you go with the before and after:

Well, I got my car back finally today after a week. I still notice that there is scratches at the edge of the wheel where it is touching the tire like not the face but the edge. I don't think they took out the tire to repaint it and it looks like if I look closely on the edge I notice all the scratches. The front ones, it looks like they did a good job but the part where the tire is looks like crap to be honest. I wonder if I should complain or they would shoo me away and say that nobody will notice if I do complain.

Thanks,

Alvin

Mechanic scratch my wheel on the hoist, said he would repair it & if i wasn't happy pay for a new one.

I decided i wouldn't be happy with a repair & it ended up costing him just over $900 with shipping from Japan for a new wheel. (Ray's Volk Racing G25)

Update: After sending the pics to my service advisor, he went forward and put an order to replace the whole wheel and that will come next week. That was pretty quick. I think that was great service by them and I am pretty satisfied with the resolution I did not really push.
