While the Valentine V1 has been the benchmark unit for years (and still continues to be during tests), other manufacturers of radars haven't just been sitting around twidling their thumbs. Check out the Escort Passport 9500ix: Video Link: http://www.amazon.com/Escort-Passport-9500ix-Detector-Display/dp/B001F0RPGG/ It's lightyears ahead of the V1 in terms of technology (i.e. using GPS to mark & prevent false positives). The V1 is extremely sensitive and will chirp a lot more often for no reason. The biggest reason that I like the V1 is for their patented "arrows" that tell you where the signal is coming from - not sure how long Valentine has left on this patent, but that's the reason you don't see other manufacturers copy/replecate this in any, way, shape, or form. You should search online to compare the 9500ix (or 9500ci - which is hardwired, more sensitive than the 9500ix, and comes with some laser "shifters") with the V1 if you're shopping in the upper/high end of the radar market. Btw, here is an excellent forum (http://www.radardetector.net/forums/forum.php) if you're interested in hearing thoughts from people that test and/or use these higher end units day in and day out. Give that you stated these are above your price range, I would look into the Beltronics RX65 (Video Link: http://www.amazon.com/Beltronics-RX65-Red-Professional-Series-Detector/dp/B0009204RI). I have two of these units and they are excellent. I'm sure you can even find them cheaper if you search on eBay/craigslist/etc. The GX65 is a bit higher end than the RX65 if you want to go that route since it includes GPS technology. ~ Im2bz2p345

Radar Detectors, Need To Know
Hey guys, I am thinking of getting a radar detector, but I was wondering what I need to know about them before buying one.
What kind of features should I be looking for, or specs? From what I have read online thus far, the Valentine V1, and the Escort Redline/Passport detectors are supposably the best ones on the market. But what exactly makes them better than each other/other different models.
Are there particular bands I should be wanting my radar detector to have that are most used by law enforcement?
I've noticed that one the companies websites, they say something like "Its twin-antennae design allows it to maximize performance by band, giving you the longest warning possible", but doesn't tell you the range of the detector. Does anyone know the average range of these detectors? What's the average range of a police radar gun?
If anyone can answer any of these questions or provide more information regarding radar detectors, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I was under the impression that the V1 was able to recognize the difference between the automatic door sensors around stores/malls around the city and police radar guns. Does yours go off frequently within the city?

What do you mean by Audi's drive it crazy? The actual car sets the detector off or??

I have the V1, false alerts are crazy in the city though. But I have my K band set to where it will go on loud if the signal increases but if it stays weak it stays on silent to avoid false alerts. Programming was a bit of work though.

Escort 9500ix for the win. Has built in GPS so will remember all spots you mark as false positives. Also will program itself to remember them after passing it 3 times. Works like a charm.

I noticed most cars that set off the k-band alert have the distance sensors on the bumper. I hate audi's for this reason. It actually gets annoying, especially when the audi is in front during high traffic. Some BMW's cause the k band alert also.

So the parking sensors set it off? The parking sensors should only be enabled while trying to park, not while driving. I know while I worked at BMW, there was a lot of issues with parking sensors going off while driving, it was quite an annoyance.
