Default Oil Change Intervals - IS350

My dealer is providing me with free oil changes, but they outlined a 5000mi (8000km) schedule, which seems short in this day and age. I googled the schedule for Canada, and it's 8000km

http://consumer.xtime.com/query6/?ma...e&locale=en_CA

I then searched the manuals online and found that the 5k mile service is just inspect, adjust and rotate tires and it seems like it's only every 10k miles an oil change is required based on this:

https://secure.drivers.lexus.com/lex...ce-schedule.do

Is this a Canada vs US thing where they think we need oil changes twice as frequently? 5000mile intervals is pretty short in this day and age.

Dealer told me with the new 3IS you only need to come in every 10,000 miles. They use full synthetic oil.

See my first link - this is directly from Lexus Canada. Doesn't make sense to me why we'd need double the oil changes as the US...

Buying or leasing? If buying, I would do every 5k miles.

I own it, but I'm fully aware that 5k oil change intervals are essentially a waste in 2014. There is a reason the US doubles that.

Correct, at least for US. Not sure what's happening above with Canada.

You have services every 5k miles, but the oil changes themselves are every 10k. The 5k services are just for inspection of fluids, brake pads and rotors, and other wear items. And tire rotation if you don't have staggered tires.

People need to stop using the term "full synthetic." Assume all new cars, particularly ones in our premium class, are using synthetic oil. We're not in 1999 anymore. And even so, premium cars started spec'ing synthetic around 98.

Also, the oils in our cars and most cars are technically synthetic blends despite being classified as "full synthetics." There's only a very small handful of expensive oils out there that are truly and genuinely full synthetic. And I'm not even sure they exist anymore as they were being phased out. A bit of nuance there but just so people know =) Used to follow this stuff before on the oil nerd forums. People using the term "full synthetic" loosely as if they actually think (hah!) they are truly getting full synthetic. You're not.

(Not that it matters, any oil sold as "synthetic" does a fantastic job)

In short, nobody has to think of any of this. Just buy any "synthetic" oil with the proper rating.

I may end up switching to the new Amazon 0W-20. Turns out it performs as well or nearly as well (splitting hairs) with Mobil 1.

another alternative - factory fill in subaru: https://amzn.to/2EljWJ5

both dirt cheap. Right now I'm using Castrol Magnatec 0-20. I thought THAT was cheap. oh boy!

5k is inspection. No tire rotation on staggered set-ups.

10k is oil change. Use Lexus brand.

Last I heard, Lexus uses Mobil-1 “Full Synthetic”. I’m almost sure they use the fuel economy version as it’s either that one or the extended performance, but I doubt they would pay for the more expensive one. I’m going to stick with the fuel economy one and change my oil every 8,500 miles since I drive 80-110 mph and hard now that I’m in Germany lol.
