Default Another Thule Aeroblade roof rack install! (lots of pictures)

I thought I would make my own thread. I have been searching for a roof rack for a few months now and was pretty impressed when I saw "FSPORTJC" post a thread on making the 2IS kit work (thanks for taking the chance on that!). A few days after I saw his thread I made my way over to my local REI to piece together a kit. They had everything instock except the 1426 fit kit for the 2IS. It seemed in the other thread that it didn't require much to make it fit, but I didn't think that was true. About 30 minutes into the install I was considering scrapping the idea and returning the kit. I will say that I've been a Master Lexus tech for 10 years and was up for the task of modifying it, it just might be more of a job than some people are willing to do.

Intended to take a lot of pictures along the way, but I just got too into it and forgot.

I started with the front bars. They weren't bad, I just straightened the brackets in a vice a little bit to extend them out a littlet. When placing the second bar on the roof in the distance from the windshield they recommend on the 2IS, it was nowhere near fitting correctly. Long story short, I moved the front bar 50mm forward, and the second bar is 60mm closer than they recommend to shorten the distance the bars needed to reach. I also had to oval out the hole for the metal bracket that grips the door frame and straighten it out in a vice so that it would extend farther downward and reach the door frame.

Here are the pictures. When I finished the install it was pretty dark outside and I haven't gotten around to taking some better outside pictures. Also, I shamelessly included some pictures of my bike.

Here is a price list from REI, MINUS the 1426 fit kit. I bought that off of Amazon for $90.

nice bike. however, I would suggest that you blur your license plate number.

Why blur lic plate number when u see lic plate all the time on the street. Its not like u have a computer to access his info, unless your a cop.

Congrats bro! Glad my thread motivated you!
It was a project.. not too hard but it takes patience and being precise!

Still don't understand why Thule apparently deemed the 3iS not capable of having a roof rack?!
(Btw I was the one that commented on your Instagram the other week saying it looks great)

looks awesome! I am thinking about doing the whispbar kit now, not the flush mount that requires drilling but the door sil version.

We'll see!

I went to the fit guide on their website and it looks like Yakima came through and developed an install kit for the '14 IS. Only bad news is it is only the Q-tower version which is not an aero style rack.

If I recall correctly, Whispbar is a subsidiary of Yakima, so I would imagine that a Whispbar installation isn't far behind (fingers crossed).

Damnit, that figures.. I'm keeping my fingers crossed Thule comes out with a fit kit for the 14IS so I can use this rack, and have the fit kit thats made for the car.

Did you do something with your front L badge or is it the lighting?

Curious, I had a roof rack back in '97. When removed the rack for the spring (used it for snowboards) there were scratched where the footpads were and where the clips hooked under the upper door frame. Are these racks better with this problem or did I just not set it up correctly?

Its a black pearl emblem from Sewell. One of the members here wasn't satisfied with the quality, was fine for me, and went ballistic. Sewell ended up pulling the product until they can change the process to make them.

Yea, I am worried about that. I thought about having some 3M clear bra installed under the pad contact points, but I'm too lazy to remove and reinstall the rack again. Its a lease so hopefully at the end I can just buff and out and pass it on..
