I have not got any metal casing.
The part that rattled around inside the metal beam was made of black plastic. And belongs on top of the lens for the trunk light. This black plastic shield was the part that came loose and that was removed.
On my car there is no metal casing on top of that part.
If I take out the trunk light lens and bulb i can stick my finger inside the metal beam it is attached to, and wiggle my finger freely around inside the beam.

The dealer told me that the part (black plastic shield) was to prevent light from the trunk light to come out on top of the hat shelf and be visible through the back window. In other words to prevent stray light from the bulb inside the metal beam.
