If I take out the trunk light lens and bulb i can stick my finger inside the metal beam it is attached to, and wiggle my finger freely around inside the beam.

I thought it was a metal but it could be plastic. I think we are talking about the same part. So far I'm not hearing anything sliding around but part did seem loose to me when I was changing the bulb. I'll ask the dealer about it on my next visit.

The dealer told me that the part (black plastic shield) was to prevent light from the trunk light to come out on top of the hat shelf and be visible through the back window. In other words to prevent stray light from the bulb inside the metal beam.

Remove the trunk liner (top/ underside) being carful with the clips - remove reverse light plug and install these... the 921 style
