The only reason I've even heard the phrase "break in period" is because I was reading automotive forums prior to buying my 2014 IS 350 F Sport. Yet, my salesperson/dealer mentioned nothing of this, and I've looked all through every page of every included manual, and couldn't find any mention of break-in period or any similar instructions. If someone knows where this is, could you point out the page number?

Is break-in still required (I'd really like to go drive it in a "sporty" way around some curvy roads), and if so, how many miles to I need to put on it? I'm surprised break-in is required at all these days, since it seems logical that manufacturers would fully break in engines during production just to be safe (especially from a brand like Lexus).

I already have almost 200 miles on it from mostly city driving at various speeds, but there have been several times where I would accelerate quickly and/or use Sport+ mode briefly. However for the purpose of the so-called "break in", I have been avoiding Sport+ and trying to drive it mostly gently.

I specifically asked my dealer about a break in period and he said that it's really not necessary as long as you're going to drive it reasonably. I still took it easy for the 1st 500km, just seemed like the right thing to do.

Breaking in your new Lexus
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:
- For the first 186 miles (300 km):
- Avoid sudden stops.
- For the first 621 miles (1000km):
- Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
- Avoid sudden stops
- Do not drive continuously in low gears.
- Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

I think if you break in new shoes, I don't see why you wouldn't do the same for a $50,000 car

Extreme high speed is actually 70% of top speed.

Anyway yeah, I'm going to go fairly easy until that 621 mile point. This weekend I'm going to try to put on another 300 miles with a road trip down roads of varying speed. As has been mentioned, for a purchase like this it's worth it even if its importance is controversial, and it just doesn't feel right revving a brand new car like crazy until it's "worn in" anyway . That said I'm probably still going to go into Sport+ mode occasionally because I really like that suspension mode, but I'll try to keep the revving to a minimum until ~600 miles.

You're very welcome. It wasn't easy to find - definitely not obvious. When I am looking up something specific in the manual, I pull it up online, through lexusdrivers.com, and can do a word search on the pdf, which is much easier than flipping through a large manual with an index that isn't that thorough.
