Default Low Fuel Light

Apologies if this has been discussed before...

When do you typically see your fuel light come on? I never need to let the tank run down very far but the other week I was curious about this. The fuel gauge was way less than 1/4 tank left and the range display was ~50kms. When I filled up shortly after it looked like there still would have been at least a gallon in the tank still.

Just feels weird because my last car (Camry) would throw the fuel light when you still had a full 1/4 left in the tank.

Mine always comes on with 20 miles (32km??) on the Range Left counter, which is somewhere around the 14 gallon point. When I filled up with 8 miles left I was just over 15 gallons so it keeps almost 2 gallons as a buffer.

Related thread listed below. I have also seen this discussed in the GS forum. We have some serious daredevils that will run the car close to empty. But as Slust mentioned, it appears there is about a 2 US gallon buffer when that light comes on the first time in these cars.

Mine comes on at the 20 miles of range mark. I've driven about 10 miles past zero and had nearly two gallons left when I refueled.

I have not seen mine. I am not even sure it works. I fill up at 1/4 talk.

hum I so far been getting 21 MPG on my 250.

My previous car right at the 1/4 tank light came on, annoying

so if there is APROX 2 gal left in essence that will be about 40 miles after the light comes on.

plenty of time to hit up a nearby gas station.

How wants to be the guinea pig for test..

Not me exception claimed

My wife never fills it up until the range left is under 10 miles. Drives me nuts.

A lot of L-Finesse Lexus models the light would come on between 25-33 miles until empty. These newer Spindle models around 15 miles until empty seems to be the new norm. And theoretically there is a 'two-gallon reserve' once you hit 0. So getting 20mpg you 'may' eek out an extra 40 miles (though probably less) but by then you'll be on fumes and risk the fuel pump overheating. So while not making a habit of going below 0, the reserve is there just in case.

Finally popped on at 35km left on the range display. Looks like I could still easily squeeze about 600km from this tank and still have a few liters in reserve
