They would gain more than they would loose. Look at the 3 series. The argument that they would loose customers can't be made, as people that buy 4 doors sedans would look at the flexibility to use the seats made accessible by those doors. Otherwise, they would buy a 2 doors coupe.

I am not sure what are you arguing about here, there is no doubt that IS will get bigger back seat (it doesnt really Need bigger trunk but I bet it will get it with reduced size tire)... whatever they get, it will be helpful.
I got IS instead of A4 not only because I am lexus's biggest fanboy, but also because it felt more special, coupe like. So I doubt they will lose that.

The smaller passenger cabin is like a womb. cozy and comfortable for 2 + 2 kids.
You make it larger, of course you can get your "friends" in there a few times that you need to. But for the rest of the days in the year when you are driving all alone, you might lose that cozy cockpit feel that is currently what got me to buy the IS over the larger competitors.

So happy to hear they are finally changing this ancient platform. The IS is old as hell. Its been 8-9 years with the same body. The change better be BIG

Now why is that an issue? Those photographs were taken in virtual darkness and sometimes that can hinder others' ability to decipher it adequately. Not all of us have the time to neatly crop images that can also be preferably large in high resolution.

All this talk about the back seat and the IS still sells very well to be 7 years old with a small back seat. If you want a large back-seat you can buy the ES or the HS at the time. Lexus clearly sacrificed room for style points and they have the advantage of offering larger vehicles at the same price point.
Has anyone really sat in the back of the 3 series, its better but not that much better (E90). The F30 though, its really large back there, almost like the E39 to me, the car really is big for a 3. The A4 is really surprising being 184 inches long, 4 inches longer but I find the backseat just as bad.
Overall no one buys ANY of these cars for back-seat ROOM, they just want to actually have a backseat available.
I believe the IS 200 debuted in Europe in 1998 so the IS really had a 8 year run as well, we just got it here late.
