water pump went bad. Should i be worried?
Hello everyone,
My water pump went bad, but when it went bad the car started to overheat and the engine oil light went on. The temp gauge never went into the red, but the it did go up 3/4 of the way. My main concern is the engine was hotter than the temp gauge suggested. Since the temp guage is based off of coolant temp, and there most likely was very little coolant left, i suspect a bad reading.
what are the signs i should be looking for? My main concern is that the engine got so hot that it burned off a quart of oil in a short period of time. I have changed the water pump and everything seems to be back to normal. I do smell a bit of oil in the exhaust, but not sure if thats just left over from when the water pump was bad.
any info would be appreciated!! thanks everyone

^Agreed. Pray that your headgaskets are still sealing. Watch for coolant magically disappearing over time; which means the coolant is getting burnt up in the combustion chamber...aka, blown HGs. Also watch for blue or white smoke coming from the exhaust AFTER at operating temp; blue = oil and white = coolant. And of course keep an eye on that temp gauge.

Offhand, I do not know were the temp sensor is, but your assessment of the temp is logical. BOLO for cream of Toyota… oil in the antifreeze or antifreeze in the oil – and what others have said.
I hate to say this, but it doesn’t take much to warp an aluminum head. If the head gasket is bad, you should check the head as wel. The good news is much of the cost in the resurfacing/straightening is already absorbed in the head gasket labor. The bad news is there are worse things that could happen to a head and block.
