Lexus released a TSB in 2006, changing oil recommendation to 5w20 for 2006 models, but later models (2007-2010) all list 5w30 in the manual/on the oil cap. it appears they changed it, then changed it back.

Models that used the 5W30 conventional oil had a recommended change interval of 5,000 mi (8,000 km). Models that used the 0W20 synthetic oil had a recommended change interval of 10,00 mi (16,000 km). The oil filter for both change intervals did not vary, nor was it updated and/or changed in any way once the newer oil/change interval was introduced.

Thanks for clearing that up for everyone Jeff, you're a valued source for the community!

My question to you is, Could you take a 2006-2010 IS250 / -2013 IS350 and change to a 0W20 synthetic with a change interval of 10,000 mi? I know others are doing it, but now that we're talking about it I think this would be a great post for newer members and some (myself included) who are hesitant to do so. I know it's not "factory recommended," but given your position I'd like to hear what you think.

A lot of people read that and gloss over a few details, that bulletin is talking about Lexus' introduction of GF-4 oil (which can be used in all Lexus models) and 5W20 grades (which is, as of the printing of that bulletin, now considered a "Lexus genuine oil").

The first note is an important one:

The recommended viscosity grade for this oil differs according to vehicle model.
Use the recommended grade specified on the oil filler cap or in the Repair Manual
or Owner’s Manual for each vehicle.

(This would have always been 5W30 until the 2011 IS250).

The second chart title is also an important one:

Engines That Can Use 5W–20

The recommended oil for the IS250 and IS350 was never specifically 5W20, nor was 5W20 ever actually used in them from the factory. 5W20 was simply introduced and Lexus stated which existing engines could use it. 5W30 was always the grade used for the IS350 and 2006-2010 IS250 and 0W20 was always the grade used for 2011+ IS250's.

It would be hard to say for certain, because there are a few part number changes here and there, though the main rotating assembly is the same between the years. I would think you will likely be fine, but to give that advice as a certainty would be questionable. Toyota has released lists (in Canada at least) for older engines that can use the 0W20 oil, and the 2GR-FSE and 4GR-FSE have not appeared on them.

Thanks! You've addressed my follow up question regarding changes in the engine and if Toyota had addressed comparable oil substitutes.

You'll be fine. There's members that have been running synthetic 0w20 with 10,000 mi change intervals well before this conversation.
