i was in the same situation with my sisters is250, i replaced her water pump and majority of the noise was gone. the water pump pulley had free play when i inspected it.

sry to revive this thread, but did OP have any luck replacing the belt tensioner, just ordered my new one and was wondering if it was diy job since I couldn't find any instructions on this forum.

You don't have to pull the compressor out BUT you will need a really low profile socket and preferably a thin ratchet...

Thanks for that tip, I need to replace my tensioner as well (the pulley sounds awful under a mechanic's stethoscope), but working around the AC compressor would've been a nightmare. If I manage to get this changed, I'll try to post up a DIY.
