exhaust pipe
I have a 2006 awd IS250.
My car is leaking exhaust. Apparently the shields rusted and there are a couple of holes in the pipe. From what i understand, theres 2 catalitic converter and a pipe resonater that is part of the fix.
the only place my mechanic (morris county nj) can find the pipe (y pipe?) is at the dealer which costs $1750. Has anyone found this piece any cheaper?
Is this piece really that expensive or just marked up a whole lot? My Father in law said he saw a pipe in New england, dont know if i want to go up there to get a piece and what else is needed to get to buy.
it has 100,000 miles on it, have had it for 8yrs.

How long does that fix last for?
My mechanic said to save me money he can do that if thats what i want but its temporary. However, no guarantee that it wont be an issue again.
What alternative pipe could they replace it with? For the life of me, i cant find it/dont have a full knowledge about it.
I'm not far from nyc, but i think my lexus isn't making that kind of drive right now.

That was the price from the dealer for part
I found two on rockauto.com
Can't paste from phone..it was a davico mfg left and right pipe, don't know if that works.

I will repeat again, go to a muffler shop, not the dealer.
The dealer will just replace expensive parts and it will most likely be extreme overkill.
Where as a muffler shop can cut out the bad section, weld in some new pipe and $50-100 later you have a non leaking exhaust system.
At a minimum, go to a ma and pa muffler shop, maybe try a few, and get a quote.
Unless your catalytic converter is actually bad, you don't want to replace it.

Dealer is only going to charge for a dealer replacement part. Most dealerships arent muffler shops so they do not do any cutting and welding of exhaust parts. (i don't even think dealerships have welders in house)
If you got to a muffler shop, they will cut out the bad parts and replace/weld with new clean and unrusted parts. Hopefully if they are good and know how to make a good clean weld, it should last forever. Ive seen some dirty welds rust and come back with in the year tho so choose your place carefully

I very much doubt that there are holes in your exhaust, I suspect you're smelling the sulfur content in your cat.
How did you suspect that your exhaust was leaking?

That wouldn't help. The F Sport is a cat back exhaust, and this leak is upstream of the cats.
I disagree. Having perforations in the exhaust near the Y-pipe is an extremely common problem on these cars, especially in areas that use lots of snow melting chemicals on the road. The holes usually occur near the points where the heat shields are attached to the pipe, and since the sound is muffled by the heat shield, go undetected until they are pretty large. Often they are discovered when the check engine light comes on, as the exhaust leak delays catalyst light-off and causes sporadic P0420 and/or P0430 catalytic converter efficiency DTCs.
