Question Buying an IS350 tomorrow... What do I need to do?

Hi Guys,

I have been posted a few threads in the last few weeks, and since then have test drove about half a dozen IS350s. 06, 07, and 08.

I think I have found the "one." Just the best combo for me, of price, mileage, and condition. It's:

2006
99K miles
Every option but, Mark Levinson and Radar Cruise control or whatever, and no spoiler
Price: 13.5K (most likely)

My question is, can you tell me guys what to absolutely check, test, and try, before I drive her off the guy's lot? This is stuff, on the detail levels, like, "hit this button" or press here and etc. I am not talking about, Carfax, Maintenance Records, Recalls, PPI, and etc. Nor am I asking what to check about the exterior, necessarily, like body fender color match, and etc...

So please let me have your list as much as you can?:

1. Question I want to start from: The headlight washers... how do I actually make them work? I tried it on the last two 350s, I held the button, I tapped it many times, I closed the door, tried then, nothing happened. Can anyone tell me how to test those?

What else do I test?

AC, Heated/Cooling searts, Wipers, Turn signals, Radio, CD, Seats?

What else can you guys think of? Thank you for your help!

check the water pump to make sure its not leaking, if you see pink crust on the center of the front face of the engine, its leaking and needs to be replaced. 06-10 IS had premature water pump failures.

That's great advice bud, thank you! Will I be able to see the pink residue without removing any covers?

Please keep it coming guys, thanks!

Turn on headlights then try the washer button.

I could tell you to check for every issue that I have found with my 06... but it would be a bit of a waste of time. Every issue I have had has been pretty minor and easily fixable. Stuff like rattling dash, fixed by stuffing some foam weather stripping in between the dash and windshield. Squeaky front brakes, fixed by buying the anti squeal shims.

I would look for anything that looks like it has been altered or changed and inspect to see if it was done right. See if speakers still sound good, ie not blown.

here is few things i can think of,
1. Make sure the cabin filter cover is not broken you can check by switching to circulation mode.
2. Make sure both HID bulb are functional
3. Test the NAVI touch screen
4. CD player does jam "replace mine 3 times so far -___- make sure you test it out
5. keep windowns open and turn on AC if it makes chirping noise the belt need to be replaced
6. check the side mirrors for defect, sometimes the gel in the mirror leaks and you would only notice it at night when it dims out
7. check to see if rear subs not blown
not much goes wrong with engine other than the water pump that was mentioned

I think you should be able to spot the leak if you remove the smaller cover (the one to get access to the Oil Filter Housing). Bring a screw driver just in case, and a flashlight will help greatly. If not, you could also remove the plastic cover over the radiator and look down. While you are there, look for sign of oil leaking from the Timing Chain Cover (do a search on this topic, very very expensive to fix and unfortunately very common with earlier model years IS).
Check the Cabin Air Dam by open the glove box and remove the plastic cover to gain access to the Cabin air filter. The flapper should move up and down when you turn the Air Rec button. This is also a very expensive fix (unless you don't care and have the vent stay open all the time) and very common with the 2IS!
Good luck.

Is it a private sale or dealership? If dealership, have them put it up on a rack so you can examine the important stuff. Look for leaks and worn bushings and such.

There are additional options you can select by toggling the "satellite buttons"; this is what I'm talking about :

You can select AFS, parking sensors, TPMS, etc from it. Test out everything there as well.

Lexus are pretty well built. I wouldn't check for everything, just the things it mostly have issues with like frozen navigation screen, waterpump and the engine rattle. If I was buying an another brand like bmw, audi, vw, volvo, and mercedes, then I would make a huge list to check for.

Or, I believe they also come on if your lights are on and you spray the windsheild washer fluid.
