Default Are OEM components necessary for my DIY?

Hey all,

I'm planning to dive into DIY and change my air filter, cabin filter, and spark plugs myself. Just wondering, how crucial is it to purchase OEM components for these items? I've been searching around on eBay and some of the items there are significantly cheaper than what's sold at the dealership or a third party vendor (ex. Sewell Lexus).

Also, is there a good air filter change tutorial on Club Lexus? I found the tutorial for changing the cabin filter but wasn't able to find a DIY For the air filter.

Thanks in advance!

it is important to get the proper spark plugs if you have a 350. They are not the same as the 250. Can't recall the reason but it had something to do with the extra set of port injectors in the 350 engine or somesuch.

cabin and engine filter you don't need to get OEM but it might be a bit cheaper to get a washable drop in engine filter rather than paper. But don't get any that use oil.

ok forget what I just said, always listen to Jeff

The IS250 and IS350 both use the same spark plugs. The main difference when doing spark plugs on a 250 vs. a 350 is that you need to remove the intake manifold on the 250 and you don't on the 350, so you'll need those gaskets on a 250.

OEM for the plugs, and aftermarket is fine for the filters.

So do gaskets need to be changed along with the spark plugs? Also, if I am understanding this correctly, there's more than one spark plug? (Hence why they're referred to as spark plugs?)

Could somebody give the pros and cons of using OEM vs. cheaper aftermarket air and cabin filters?

Thanks for helping a n00b out

The gaskets (there are 3 of them) are rubber and can usually be reused without issue, but if I'm taking the intake off, I'm putting in new gaskets, it doesn't make sense not to (to me). There are 6 spark plugs, one for each cylinder.
