Default what gas do you use?

so ive filled it once and figured since it takes standard oil, it'll take 87oct gas. i notice the ride isnt as smooth as when i first bought it.

is 87 gas REALLY gonna cause a rougher ride, ala, a little harder shift from 1st/2nd/3rd gear?

it was smooth, not its a little rougher. im a little under 1/2 a tank right now ad im gonna be doing a lot of driving today so ill need to fill it. any recommendations? will gas really change the rough shifts?]

its an 08 250 with 69k miles.

I dont know about the lexus but my Saab, which was a turbo, would detune the engine if regular is used.

The recommended is 91 and it runs like crap on 87 so why put regular? Its only 3-4 bucks more per fillup.

Example:
My area reg costs 4.09/gal and super is 4.29.

Fulltank (13 gals usually when I fillup) costs:

Super-$55.77
Reg-$53.17

I dont think most people realize how little difference in price they really are.

It is only like 20 cent or less a gallon for premium. Do you really need to save a couple bucks a tank? Is your car knocking? Then it is definitely the gasoline.

What does your vehicle's owners manual say? I bet that the manufacturer knows best.

buy a honda if your thinking about using regular 87 gas. You drive a Lexus! Dont cheap out 2-4 dollars at the tank for using regular.

I run on E-30 to E-50 blends of ethanol. If only E85 is available at the pump I blend it with 91 in my tank. The higher level ethanol blends are cheaper & higher octane. Pure ethanol is 113 octane; so E-30 to E-50 will run around 94 octane.

The IS has a compression ratio of 12 to 1, very high, so it takes advantage of the higher octane. Beings we have modern fuel systems there are no concerns with the higher level blends. I often have to go out of my way to find it, but the peace of mind of using an american made fuel vs often times imported petroleum products + cleaner burning & high octane benefits of ethanol make it worth it.

There are several maps online that help you find the stations that carry higher level blends. In Minnesota its not difficult at all.

I always use premium for the following reasons:
1. It is highly recommended by Lexus.
2. I believe if you use something else, you could void your warranty if you have one.
3. It prolong the life of the IS engine.
4. It gives better performance because the car is tuned to use premium.
5. You may get bad MPG if you use anything lower so you might even spend more of using cheaper gas.
6. You drive a Lexus IS which is more performance oriented than gas saving. If you worry too much about gas, you should pick a hybrid car instead. (some may disagree and start framing this point but i'm just speaking out loud lol)

Short answer your looking for is engine timing.

Lower octane gas will make the motor pull timing to prevent detention which in turn hurts performance, idel, air fuel ,etc.

My car is a 350 with direct injection yeah yeah yeah. I also live down south where we have 93 octain. At times (mostly on the interstate) I've ran the middle grade 89 as it's only going to burn off at a sustained speed. Never ever put in 87. Purely crap will come.

I only use Sunoco or Shell premium unless in a pinch.. Also, I think using the best gas you can find might help out with not getting that carbon build up problem

I don't know why people even ask this...back in the day we argued this to death. And the concensus was always go premium...Why do people insist on ignoring recommendations from the maker of the car?
