Correct, spacers can be unsafe... IIRC oem 18's need ~15mm in the front and ~20mm in the rear which is A LOT of spacer. Many people run the kind of spacers with 'built in studs' which I have never felt comfortable with. If you wanted to do it right you would have to find some longer studs to replace your oem studs... but that is a lot of work for OEM wheels.
The sunken in OEM wheels bothered me too when I lowered my car... which is why I knew I wanted new wheels when I needed to get new tires.
