Default When negociating at a dealership...

Looking to get a used 2012 is350, listed at 32.5k.

With a hefty down payment, I plan on offering 30.5k

Typically, when making this offer would the 30.5k consider "Out the door," (Including tax/title/lic) cost? . Or would that be a totally different discussion? Through my research, I've seen successful negotiations of used car with a similar down payment average about 2k. But then see this 2k "savings" from negotiations be applied towards the tax/tax/lic.

So would it just be unheard of to offer 30.5k "out the door?"

Also, I qualify for the $1000 college graduate discount. Would it be more strategic to keep this disclosed until after the negotiation process is at a mutual number and then notify the salesman?

As many of you can tell, it has been a while since I've purchased a car and I will do my due diligence in research prior to stepping into the dealership.

Thanks!

when I bought my 2010 is350 2wks ago I put down 4k. Dealer fee was $699, depending on location sale tax was 6% ($1,499). I only managed to talk them down $500 of the sales price and got them to install brand new tires.

I never bought from dealer just because I prefer private party but I would ask them about the out the door price before starting any negotiations and go from there as you'll have idea how much their dealer fee is and what hidden taxes to expect. Otherwise they'll agree with you on a price and they'll hit you with huge fees.

Tax, title and license fees are 3rd party costs, and not dealer profit. So if you are offering a price that eats into their profit, you really can't trade one item for the other.

And, are you sure that the $1000 college graduate discount applies to purchase of a used car?

In Massachusetts tax, title and license fees are all payable to the state, not the dealer so they are non-negotiable, but your state may vary.

I would tell them up front whatever discounts you have. If that $1000 comes out of the dealer's pocket and you don't disclose it until after the negotiations, he'll probably tell you it was already included in their price. If someone else pays it, it won't matter to the dealer.

If you want to pay $30.5K for the car, I wouldn't offer that. I would start somewhere around $27K and bargain up. Have a check with whatever amount that "hefty down payment" amount is in your hand. Tell the salesman your offer and hand him the check. Tell him if he really wants to sell the car today then to write out a contract and accept the check. It is real, real hard for them to hand back that check!

Go to KBB.com and lookup the trade-in value of the car your looking at. That should give you an idea of what the dealer has into it. They maybe put a few hundred into detailing, fixing rock chips, etc but at least you know how big or small of a profit margin they are working with.

ALWAYS negotiate the out-the-door price, if you dont, they have free reign to slap on application fees, processing fees, etc. after the fact.

I recently bought a 2012 IS250 AWD for 26500 OTD, I made my offer, the salesman balked at my offer and I left. A week later, he called and asked if i was still interested in the car at my offering price..

I just bought my 2011 IS350 a month ago for $32k+fees. Dealer didn't drop $1 off the price,

They were very firm, apparently low mileage 2IS 350's are a very hot item here in CA. In the 20 minutes waiting for finance to get my paperwork together, 2 other people were inquiring about my car. On the upside, they did give me a very good price for my PRIUS trade-in, more than Carmax could offer.

WHAT? for a little more you could have jump into a brand new 3IS. I think you paid a huge price imo

Not quite. TrueCar estimates a bone stock 2014 IS350 RWD at about $39,000, with an invoice of $38,345. The invoice price of a new IS350 is 20% more than he paid--that's pretty significant. Plus, you don't know how the 2011 was equipped.

That is probably because your state might have one or two dealers. In Socal, if they know you want their bottom line price, they will go right to it since there are like 6 or more dealerships within 60 miles or so.

20% is nothing if you consider you are not only getting a brand new car with 0 miles but a new generation with a much better resale value, 8 speed, improved handling...
I donl;t know what others would do but if I get that close 20-30% I would get a new car not a 3 years old car.

Well price wasn't the issue.....

Subjectively in my opinion the 3IS is still the ugliest car I have ever seen in my life, on par with the Aztek. No offense 3IS owners, I like your interior especially in F-Sport trim.

I always had a thing for the 2IS body style so I was actively searching for an '11-'12 model ONLY. It seemed each day it was harder and harder to find a clean low mileage 2IS 350. In fact I was going to pay $37k for a CPO 2012 IS350 with 11k miles but it was 4 hours away, until I found mine at a Lexus dealer only 20 miles away. Sure I might have overpaid but I wanted the last generation of this body style only. If I didn't get one, I probably would have bought an F30 335i M-Tech or an Infiniti Q50S. The 3IS wouldn't even remotely be on my shopping list.
