Really? that's worrying. i did this almost a year ago and driven over 10k miles and have not had any other symptoms relating to head gasket, oil is also always clean. Anyone else had similar issues? why shouldnt the coolant overflow and gush out? specially since the coolant will start being pumped causing a pressure and as the cap is open it just comes out
But I'm no expert, I just know from past experience. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in on this.

Coolant shouldn't overflow because the coolant system is not pressurized with the cap off. In a normal cooling system, it would just bubble out of the opening. When I worked on my honda prelude, the same thing happened to me. Coolant gushed out as soon as i started the car. Turned out to be a blown head gasket.

1- I agree. However when removing the air in the system, it will bubble up and maybe spill a bit, especially since the water pump is so close to the cap. (I am not an expert either)
2-You definitely have to monitor the coolant level for a few weeks and add coolant if needed.
3-It is a good idea not to reinstall the plastic under tray for a few days/ weeks to make sure that you don’t have any leaks.
4-I already poured 2 gallons of coolant in the system, so you may want to buy 2 gallons when replacing the water pump. (I don’t have any leaks at all)

About to tackle this next weekend. I took in my 07 IS for a 75K maintenance and they came back with a repair estimate for $4K. It included this replacement plus, cv's and struts.

Also want to say a big thank you to Serifiyah for this excellent guide. I've completed my waterpump change.
One suggestion I would make to reduce amount of waterfall from the water pump when removing, I created a little siphon using clear tubing attached snugly to a lid of a plastic bottle, i then pumped it creating a vacuum which drained quite a bit of fluid from inside the waterpump . I pushed in the open end of the tube through the waterpump output where the big O ring sits, then just waited for as much coolant to drain as possible.

the water pump on my mom's 08 IS 250 was replaced on Friday. No leaks until last night.
took it back to my mechanic... he replaced the small O ring on the water inlet housing ( the one that came with the Aisin pump was destroyed after he removed it ).
ran the car for 20 minutes, no leaks. drove the car home, checked for leaks - nothing.
the car was turned off and sat for about 25 minutes, NOW signs of a leak.
any ideas ?

I called and made an appt with the dealer that originally "found" the water pump leak.
I explained to the adviser what we did and what to possibly look for.
