downshifting with paddle shifters
So I've been playing with paddle shifters ever since day 2 of getting my car (I got my car during the night time of day 1 so didn't really get a chance to play with it) and it's been an entire year. I know that Lexus doesn't have DCT so every time I downshift, the car jerks violently unless I'm downshifting at about 1500 or less RPMs. I've been told to try rev matching even though it's an automatic and I've done it once and I think I got lucky because I timed it right as the transmission was shifting and there was no jolting at all whatsoever but I can't do it every time I downshift because it's just not as easy as when I used to do it with a manual transmission. I have tried easing off of the brakes while the transmission was changing to a lower gear above 2000 RPMs and that was the closest I could get to make the car jerk less (it still did jerk but I felt it a lot less). Is there any fix to this? I dislike how every other car that has paddle shifters (not talking about cars from Lexus) actually does have DCT except (now I'm bringing up some cars from Lexus) the IS F and the LFA (correct me if I'm wrong because I'm pretty sure I am). Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

changing the gauges to show gears actually did help but I realized that if I revved just enough and timed it correctly while the transmission is shifting into the lower gear, it prevents the jolt completely. I asked my sister (she was with me in the car at the time) if she felt anything while I was downshifting and she said she didn't

If notice when your gauge shows the gears then you downshift, that a dot will show what is still in before it downshift to the gear you wanted. Rev matching takes is something that is more of an second nature kind thing, but that's good your able to do that. Keep practicing, very useful when you go to track or mountain runs.

The IS paddles are not truly designed to rev match as you have noted. By the time your speed and RPM have slowed enough to downshift without jerking, you pretty much have negated any advantage of driving "fast ", but atleast you are positioned to optomize your acceleration.
ISF and LFA do rev match. I've driven both models on the track and they sound GREAT too.

yeah, I figured as much. I played around with it a lot more today as I had to go to school. I sometimes rev matched while downshifting and it set me in a perfect spot for immediate acceleration whereas if I didn't rev match, I would immediately just start engine braking. Do you know if this will have any effect on the transmission though? As rev matching has it's good uses, I am still sometimes not revving correctly and that makes my car produce a very weird and noticeable sound (since I have aftermarket exhaust) XD

I'll admit to driving and downshifting many times myself, but I do have an upgraded torque convertor, valve body, LSD, Amsoil and tranny cooler on my GS and the downshifts work smoother after the mods, especially with the Amsoil Synthetic FULL FLUSH

I posted in the other section of the forum as well but do any of you know about the LSD swaps? I've read four other members successfully did it (don't remember if it was here on CL or my.is) but ever since last night, open diff just won't do it for me and I don't want to spend too much on it but idk how a LSD from an IS 300 fits into a '12 IS 250

it'll jerk if your foot is off the accelerator pedal while downshifting. this car doesn't have rev match so it won't blip the throttle to match unless you have your foot on the pedal. I've only used the paddle shifts for showing off my intake or as a gear limiter.

Definitely talk to CL member Jeff Lange if you have questions on that swap.
