In order to get the absolute best, deepest, finish from any paint - it all comes down to the prep work. It all starts with proper routine washing and drying. Using proper technique paired with high quality products and tools will reduce the risk of introducing swirls and scratches into your paint (the majority of paint defects are introduced by improper washing and drying). These types of defects will leave your paint looking dull and flat. Your vehicle should be washed AT LEAST every 2 weeks (preferably every week).
The car should be decontaminated with detailing clay (and Iron X if you choose) as needed, but usually once every year. Detailing clay works to remove bonded contaminates from the surface of the vehicle creating a much smoother surface, thus helping to restore some lost gloss since a flat/smooth surface = a glossy surface.
Following decontamination, the paint can be polished to near perfection. This is often done by a professional detailer. Compounding and polishing is a process which uses abrasive materials to remove a fine layer of paint in order to create a near perfectly flat surface that is free of defects. This creates an extremely smooth and shiny surface.
The polished surface then needs to be protected with a sealant, wax, or coating to protect it from the elements.
Here is an extreme example of a VERY neglected IS300. You can see the intense amount of swirls and scratches on the hood. The portion that has been corrected (through a series of compounding and polishing steps) is much deeper, darker, and is highly reflective/glossy.
This is a more realistic example, as this BMW is fairly well taken care of. While the defects are not nearly as severe as the photo of the Lexus above, you can clearly see the difference in the area that has been polished compared to the area that has not been polished.
My SGM is very well maintained and is currently coated with 22ple VX1 pro coating. The coating has been applied for 10 months and still looks fantastic (thanks to proper maintenance).
... I could elaborate more, but most people don't care to devote this type of attention to their vehicles, so let me know if you have any questions and I would love to help answer them.
Hope that helps to motivate you to get your SGM looking good again.
