I went to go throughly wash claybar and wax the car today and i noticed little marks on the roof and on the top of the door. It looks like pieaces of the clear coat are coming off. Like some deffect from the factory. I wanted to know if asnybody else has had this same problem?

yeap....i had this problem with my front bumper...



but it was still under warranty and i didnt pay anything to get it fixed =]. good luck with yours!

hmm ive seen people with there front bumpers having problems. But mine is on the roof and upper door area by the roof. it reall is pissing me off this is one of many problems that i have had with this car im really dissapointed in the quality. Lexus is supposed to to be known for quality and fitment.

I think that it's due to the plastics that covers the car in the factory. There is a TBIS to solve this problem. A DIY solution it is to use a hairdrier in hot air position over the marks and they will disappear. In my car I had this problem and it was solved with the hairdrier.

This started out as one small spot about a year ago and now the car looks like it has leprosy. It’s a 2013 hard top convertible IS250C. This seems extreme even for an almost ten year old car. Anyone know of any class action lawsuits regarding defective lacquer?

Well for one thing it’s not lacquer. If it was fine for the first 8 years then just started, so I doubt it’s a defect. More like the elements (bird, sap, sun, etc) got at it. Or even something (nicks, dings) when it was retracted. You're not the original owner (I’m guessing)?

No way is this not clear coat. It’s too widespread and dispersed to be bird droppings or sap. The pictures must not be clear enough.

This flaking is all over the top and trunk.

You didn’t answer if you were original owner? Could have been damaged at some point and repainted (poorly). That seems the most likely scenario. Regardless, Lexus won’t do anything for you, being almost 10 years old.

To be fair, red paint typically absorbs the colors of the UV spectrum a lot easier than other colors. So technically it should fade faster than other colors. Being kept outside in a sunny/hot state also makes paint fade/clear coat failure happen quicker. IIRC, many manufacturers used to use single stage red paints, so they always faded extraordinarily fast (I think Honda is one of the big ones, many of their old red cars look terrible). Only guesses I can take with OP is the paint wasn't well-kept, it was repainted at some point (you can tell with a clear coat thickness gauge), or it's possible it's just a manufacturing defect.

As a point of reference, my silver IS has been outside its entire life in southern Louisiana. The clear coat is starting to fail on the roof trim, side mirror covers, top of the rear spoiler, and the top of the rear bumper. All plastic pieces. I have taken care of it relatively thoroughly since I've owned it the last 7 years, and the clear coat failing on those pieces has gone very slowly at least (not flaking off yet but I can tell every time I detail the car).
