Your oil is low, but not low enough to trigger the light. You probably slamed on your brake or took a sharp turn that shifted the oil to one side, just enough to trigger the light for a bit. That's probably why the light was only on once. A dirty oil filter will not give you the low oil warning.

With that being said, all the previous posters are correct that your risking your engine when the alternative is a cheap oil and filter change. Most oils are made very well today, they can probably go a year before changing. However, the filter is the weak point, you should be changing the filter more often than the oil

low oil = lack of lubrication = extra friction = extra heat = seizing/binding parts, etc
spun bearings and worse. whichll cost you at least a grand to break down and rebuild if youre paying someone else to do it.

read my response here to burning oil:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...-a-sudden.html
burning a little bit of oil isnt that bad. but neglecting your gahdamn oil level is.

as for oil not being changed for xxxx miles, most synthetics are said to be good for 6,000 miles. and some oils guarantee 15,000 miles. i personally prefer to change mine out every 3000 even if it is unnecessary and a waste of money.

they are SUPPOSED to, yes. as in, every single shop that changes oil is supposed to replace the filter. it goes hand in hand with each other. next time pay attention to your receipt and ensure that they did.

also, some heinous shops will charge you for a new filter but not actually replace it so ensure that they replace it.

Make sure your mechanic is a good one. There are some pretty shady fellows out there.
