That "tab" is supposed to be used; it is to go behind the OE black triangle trim piece to help hold it in place.

The tabs go into the triangle ends of your window to ensure a snug fit. The only difference I can see between JDM and AVS besides price is the JDMs are more flush. That tab though, was designed to go into the end of driver/passenger panel to make sure it doesn't peel off when driving. You can definitely shave it down if you'd like. I couldn't justify paying 400 dollars for 4 plastic pieces that can be ripped off.
