IS250/350 Intake Sound Generator Installation (3IS/4GS)
#17
So my final verdict: it's excellent. It's exactly what I wanted.
I had kind of expected it to be noticeably louder, but I was worried it would be too loud. After driving it last night and today I can confirm that it is not too loud. It's not even much louder, just has a nicer sound when revving (especially between 3500 and 5500rpm). It does not sound like a cold air intake, which has more of a "sucking" sound, this is more of an engine sound. It's quite fantastic.
All that said, I don't think this modification is for everyone, or even most people on ClubLexus. It is a much more "refined" sound than I think most people are looking for. They want to hear their intake and exhaust. With the sound generator installed, it sounds like a factory setup, not like it has an intake on it. It's hard to describe, but I would just say that it has a "nicer" sound, not a louder sound, or an aftermarket intake sound.
For no particular reason here is a complete picture diary of a very simple install, haha.

Basically it's a diaphragm inside of a canister that intake air pressure vibrations push against. What this does is allow the air pressure waves inside the intake to be transmitted to the outside without actually having the intake open to the atmosphere after the MAF sensor.
It converts intake pressure waves that would normally stay in the rubber intake tube into audible sound in the engine bay. Generating sound from air movement in the intake tube.

If there were any other gains they would be so minimal I wouldn't be able to tell anyway, most likely.
You'd have to dyno it do see if there were other gains. I don't plan on doing that, lol. Even with the F-Sport intake or Joe-Z intake the gains are quite minimal IMO.
In other words: the difference in sound is the most important difference an intake can make on a 2IS in my opinion, any performance gains are so small that they pretty much don't matter in my opinion. You'll notice more with your ears than you will with your (relatively inaccurate) butt dyno.

I have it for eight months now and I love it. It makes deep throbbing sound reminicent of those V8 engines. It is not the same as Cold Air Intake which makes whining swooshing sound. I am not good at describing the sound. It is just deep growl or roar. Only minor comment is it starts to make the angry sound at 3800-4000 rpm. Below that I hardly hear any difference. Do you experience the same, Jeff?

There is very little difference below 3500rpm, though it is slightly different, just not much. I do enjoy the sound, and with the weather a bit warmer today I noticed it more. I think the freezing temperatures prevent the diaphragm from moving as freely.
I consider it well worth the money, especially for the way my car is set up. It's supposed to be like a cool factory version of the car, not something that's been modified.
