New with clutch question
Hey guys,
Brand new with an 08 IS250 M/T and done a bit of reading here already. Thanks to CL, I remembered to check my VIN on Lexus's site and got some good information on the car I'm picking up this weekend. When I test drove the car, I didn't hear any unusual noises coming from the trans when shifting or working the clutch.
Noticed on the service description, the previous owner swapped for an aftermarket flywheel and clutch, but of course there's no information on what's in the bell housing. From the limited searching I've done, it looks like Fidanza is the top aftermarket flywheel maker along with Spec for their stage 2 sprung clutch.
I'm assuming that I can take off the inspection cover on the bell housing (is there one?) and look to see if I can spot the pressure plate, but is there any good way to tell what's been installed in there without tearing the transmission out? Is it possible to call the dealer and reference the repair number to get more info? And the long shot - find the previous owner on here and get the history

Just wanted to know why you are concerned? I mean if you have no issues with how it drives, would it not be great that they added a new clutch?
Seems like a lot of work for no real gain. Keep in mind I am not a mechanic so my view might show my ignorance.

It's nice that the dealer installed a clutch/flywheel, but with only 42000 miles I'm guessing the owner had issues with the transmission to make him/her want to have the clutch replaced. I'm just wondering which clutch/flywheel they went with for future info, especially after reading a few threads where people installed unsprung clutches and had issues a short time down the road. I'd like to know if I should watch for any specific symptoms, and it would give me a little peace of mind to know what's down there.

I find it hard to beleive that the dealer would install an aftermarket flywheel seeing as the factory one is a dualmass unit.
However to repond to your original question the most polular Flywheel is the Fidanza flywheel which I personaly have but not installed yet as I am waiting for my powertrain warranty to expire fist.

02/19/2012 - INSTALL CUSTOMER PROVIDED CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL, CUSTOMER WAS MADE AWARE THAT WE P (website cut that part off)
08/06/2012 - CUSTOMER STATES PERFORM WORLD CLASS 27 POINT INSPECTION
08/06/2012 - THE CAR HAS AN HIGH PERFORMANCE CLUTCH. NOT THE ORIGINAL CLUTCH. NO WORK PERFORM

When I called the dealership that performed the work on 2/9/12, they said the rest of the statement was something like "dealership not responsible for anything bad that happens because of this"
I should have 13 months/17k miles on the powertrain if that didn't void it. I wonder if the dealership performed the work the warranty would still cover it, but it'd probably be an uphill battle.
The place I bought it from offered a 3 month/unlimited mile bumper-bumper warranty on it so hopefully I'll be able to give it a thorough shakedown before I get out of that time period.
