Default Factory shock/suspersion replacement question - MY06 IS350

Hello members,

Today I have my car in for recall work and my service rep advised I need to replace my shocks because they see signs of leakage. I have about 160k ish miles and I know it’s probably time to replace, but to be honest my car feels fine and I don’t see signs of uneven wear and tear on my tires. Here are my questions:

1) At what point do I / should I really need to replace my shocks?
2) I have 06 IS350 – is all 06 shock to 2012 the same? I heard F sport have different spring but not 100% certain if the actual shock is the same for all these years. Does newer year (meaning 08, 09, 10, 11, etc…) have better shock quality than My06, if so, which year shock should I buy?

Thanks in advance for all comments

David

You are supposed to replace them when they start leaking as specified by your dealership. This basically means your shocks are "blown" 06-13 i believe are all the same shocks EXCEPT awd. Definitely a good time to upgrade your suspension. I have an 06 is 350 myself.

When I did my oil change two weeks ago I did see signs of leakage, but was pretty dry leak....if that make any sense. Not a bit of oil got on to my wheels either so I didn't think it was a big deal.
Parts alone is 1200 for a set of bran knew stock shock....pretty pricy for toyota part.

You can find an inexpensive set in the classified... Many CL members are on coils

1) Cheapest option is to ask for a used set in the classifieds. I would avoid high mileage ones If you are paying for labor to have them installed
2) New OEM shocks are $700-800 from sewell with clublexus discount. Shocks for x-package, sport package, factory f-sport package are different
3) f-sport accessory shocks (bilstein) are about the same price as OEM, nice upgrade if you want to trade comfort for performance
4) Megan and BC racing coilovers are $700-$1200, nice if you want to ride lower

1) Noted. I will check that out
2) If i cannot find a used one I will definitely check Sewell. My local dealer is charging me 1200 (after tax) for a set of shocks only..... (700 to 800 is big different)
3) that might be a good option so IS can handle better. it's got too much body roll...IMO. I wonder if I have F-sport shock and regular stock spring will affect anything...
4) I communte 100 miles a day so lower ride will not work for me as it will kill my tire in months.
