When it comes to noise there are many different forms. "Road Noise" can be caused by wind noise, tires, in car rattles (wires rattling, panels rattling, etc.), or sound entering from outside into the car by crevices, or through the body.

The sound deadener I used has been discontinued. Was the thickest in the market. It wasn't really used for road noise although it helped a small bit. It was used more for roof flex due to the subwoofer. Closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl would be more to stifle road noise.

This is probably the best website to read up on different products for applications. The products he sells are very good but just as pricy.

If you're just dropping the headliner you shouldn't need to remove the sunroof mechanism. I had to do it to get the deadener around the moon roof. I had to remove the dash on the ES as I couldnt see any other way to get it out. Whether or not you have to I am not sure. It really depends on how much you think you can bend the headliner without creasing it. Trust me, its not much.

If you're thinking about removing it you'll have the remove all the panels touching the headliner, any handles, lights, and the front seats to make your life easier. A friend at a local dealership for advice would help too.
