IS250 OEM Chrome wheels flaking/corrosion problem
After dealing with a slow leak in one of my tires, Costco informed me all of my chrome wheels are corroding and flaking on the inside which is causing my tires not to seal properly. I have a 2008 IS250 out of warranty. Anyone have this problem and if so will the dealer take care of it? Seems to me this would be a safety issue. I was told all the major luxury cars have this issue with Lexus being notorious for the worst, cheapest chrome jobs. Make me irate to spend that kind of money on an upgrade to have this happen. Any input would be appreciated if you've dealt with this issue!

I just replaced my 10-spoke chromes on my '06, for the same reason; only one was leaking air, but I didn't want to wait for the others to do it, too, and I surely didn't want to fork over 500+ smackers for one replacement. My chrome wheels were from Sewell in Ft. Worth. Don't know who chromed them. I had them put on when I bought the car new. 6 years? Corrosion? Had I known that was a possibility, I would have chosen something else. Never again!

Correct. The 2IS never came with chrome wheels from the factory. I've never seen a Lexus accessory option for them in Canada either, perhaps it is a USA regional thing from Lexus USA or Lexus distributors, but as far as I am aware any chroming going on would be an aftermarket thing (done to factory wheels of course).

My 08 came with the chrome version of the 18". The window sticker says it was a dealer installed option at a cost of $2,295! My chrome is in fairly good condition, although there are some curb marks from the original owner. I'm going to plastidip them next week and roll on them for the winter.

Has anyone had any luck with the dealer regarding corroding stock IS250 (2nd gen) wheels? Has anyone discovered a good, affordable chrome replacement wheel that looks correct on our car? Thanks.

Lexus Champion
Chrome wheels are always an 'after the factory' option, Lexus has third parties do the chroming and then sells them as an option for a tidy profit. I never liked chrome wheels for the corrosion aspect and I don't think any car looks better with chrome wheels, they just aren't needed imo. They always remind me as an 'old man's' option, along with Landau Irons, curb feelers, and vinyl tops. But plenty of people like them, so that is their decision. I'd rather save the money and put it to better use.

Yeah, I didn't think much of the chrome wheel look but thought maybe it was the only option to those ****ty Lexus OEM wheels that are corroding out from under me. I found a resource on eBay...

...they appear to be reproductions. I'm wondering whether I should just take what I've got and have them refinished. My tire dealer already did a quick fix when I returned with new tires and a slow leak –*he discovered that the corrosion was causing an improper seal, so he cleaned and lightly sanded the surface. It's better, but I get the LOW TIRE light every 6 weeks or so. It blows. Any suggestions?
