Default Rough idle - IS350

Hey all,

I have about 21k on my 2010 IS350. I always use premium fuel. For the past 5-6 months, I've been exclusively on BP. I still get good mileage of mix city and highway ( 23-24mpg). Over the past week, I've noticed my car stuttering as if it was about to stall. This usually happens while I wait at a stoplight. It can happen while the engine has been on for 5-10 minutes in the morning. Or it can happen after the car is all warmed up. The RPM dips to 500 when the stuttering happens. I normally idle around 700 rpm.

I take good care of my car. I get the right fuel, do the oil changes at the proper interval, etc. No mods, nothing.

What can it be? Fuel issue? I know that BP recently recalled some fuel in the midwest region but nothing related to the NE. Can it be carbon buildup like the 250s?

Thanks!

My first thought would be a vacuum leak.
I also fixed a Mazda that exhibited the same symptoms as you just described... turns out the intake pipe had some accordion ridges for flexibility and they had developed a small tear in the bottom of one.
So check your intake plumbing, and make sure no vacuum lines are lying around loose or are developing holes.
Good Luck!

sitting at 21k miles? pick up ur cell phone and call ur prefer lexus dealer to setup an appointment. be sure to have ur driver license and poof of insurance with u so u can enjoy a lexus vehicle loaner they will provide u while they figure out what is causing this problem. its def. not carbon buildup asonly 250s are common with those. vacuum leak? did u mess with the intake? or bad fuel, my friend got bad fuel in las vegas, on the way back to cali his car stalled, loss of power, he pretty much crap his pants since he was out in the middle of the desert. he added STP fuel injector cleanerand that solved the problem. he has 2011 acura rdx.

I am experiencing the same issue as you, kl323. I have a 2007 IS350 (purchased in 2009) 65k miles that when stopped at a traffic light, kind of stutters to the point where it feels like the engine is going to stall. It doesn't happen frequently (probably encountered it ten times or less in the 3 years that I've owned the car) and I've been filling up with Shell 91 octane premium gas since I've had the car. Interested in hearing if anyone has found a resolution to the same issue.

I have heard of several members having had their fuel pumps replaced for similar situations. Wish you luck!

You can try cleaning your MAF sensor with "CRC Mass air flow sensor cleaner" found at your local auto store, also try resetting the ECU.

Wow, your 2010 only has 21k, damn my 2011 already has 42k.

2011 is350 here. I had this occur once. I'm in the Midwest, Omaha.

Was sitting at a light and Rpms dropped. It's never happened again but was worrisome at the time. I can tell you I had a 35k scheduled service that week anyways after getting that done hasn't happened since. Could be a coincidence but hey at least take it in and have it checked.

Engines only *really* need 3 things to run - spark, fuel, and air. A vacuum leak will usually cause the problem to be persistent, not just a one time thing. A sensor could be another issue. A fuel pump going out will cause stalls or other issues when you open it up - like it's choking. A bad spark plug, or one that is a little dirty, could cause it to misfire - change your plugs, clean your air filter, listen for air leaking around the motor. If you do those things, you probably won't have issues again.

I can't speak for Toyotas, but most cars won't throw the CEL unless they misfire more than a couple times in a row.

FYI - growing up in Detroit taught me a few things. Going to Hondas tech school in the 90's taught me a few things about Japanese simplicity .
