Cam rattle is just the noise that is associated with a chain driven camshafts (ie the GR series motors in the 06-and up IS 250's and 350's). The IS 300's from 05-and previous used the JZ inline six which had a belt driven cam. Metal chains make more noise as they spin on metal gears then a rubber belt did. Those 2.5's and 3.5"s are just "louder" motors, but it's nothing to lose sleep over.

If you hear it every morning, they will take it the night before, give you a loaner, and start it up cold the next morning.

no, has nothing to do w/ the transmission lol.
it happens when you start your car after the motors been cooled off. it's like a grinding sound coming from the motor..
i had mine fixed sometime last year..they gave me a gs350 fsport for a few days so ***** i wasn't complaining lol.

Just spoke with Lexus. The noise we hear is just the weights in the cam gears and it wont cause any danmge. The noise come from when the oil drips down through the cam gears and you start up your car just the weights moving without lubrication for a split second, until oil gets circulated into the gears.

All I know is that when I use Castrol Full Synthetic, I don't hear it anymore. It's only when I use other oil like Mobil 1, royal purple, or eneos. I could be wrong and It could all just be a coincidence, but I've switched it from Castrol to Mobil back to Castrol and only time I hear the rattle is when I'm not using Castrol.
