I have a lot of small scratches and swirl marks on my black lexus. What can i do to get rid of them permanently or at least for a very long time.

Use light paint restorer, or use Rubbing compound by turtle.

Actually, I think you did need to say they're gone. Good to know.

Get urself a polisher or porter cable and some buffing pads check out autogeek.net lots of great products and DIYs there that'll help u out. I used wolfgang swirl/scratch remover on some light scratches I had and it came right out.

Swirl marks are produced a number of ways - most commonly, improper washing techniques. A paint correction detailing will remove your swirl marks, and proper washing/drying will minimize future defects on your paint. Lexus paint is rather soft, so if you truly only have typical swirls, a lighter compound (I recommend meguiar's M205) with a DA buffer (like porter cable 7424xp) would make your paint like new again.

Check out detailedimage.com

They have a fantastic guide to detailing as well as a great blog with tons of examples of proper detailing techniques. They also have a fantastic online store with all of the best products. They have been my go to source for all professional grade products for a while.

Wet sand the scratches then buff and polish.

Do not wet sand for swirls! That is way overkill!

You need to start with the very least aggressive method possible and work your way to something more aggressive only if needed! You are just taking years off of your clear coat's life if you are wet sanding for minimal defects such as swirls and light scratches.

I have tons of swirls on my blue onyx IS. I was quoted almost $1k for a paint correction. wondering how much of a difference it would be in price to add another coat of paint instead (and is this even possible)?

Oh - and +10000 on how soft the lexus paint is!

Buffing if done right will last a long time. Sure detailers know of tricks by using fillers that will disappear after time.

A good detailer will buff the car with a cutting compound with either wool or foam pad, certain areas may need to be wetsand with 1500 or 2k grit. Then follows through with a polishing, then sealer and then wax.

1K for buffing WOW never heard of that, even top high end detailers do not charge that. I would look for someone else.

To detail a car the right way detailer would spend about 5 hours on it. Material 20-30 bucks to do each vehicle. Going right 150-350

From what was explained to me the paint correction is a lot more "detailed" than a regular detail / buff job - what with using halogen lights and all. i was told it would take about 8 - 10 hours. and the hourly rate was about 100 - 125 an hour. maybe it's more expensive in NY?
