Car downshifts into 5th on the freeway if I touch the brakes
On my IS350 if I am cruising at 65mph and I touch the brake pedal the car will downshift into 5th gear and will continue to hang in 5th gear for quite some time even though I am still going 65mph with my foot off the break.
I am still on the gas and it sits in 5th gear for a while. I can see it is in 5th gear on the gear selector screen on the dash. If I push the "SNOW" button it will immediately shift into 6th gear.
I am just cruising in the normal mode, not the PWR or SNOW mode.
It almost seems like a software thing.
Any ideas?

I can understand the theory and application, however it stays in 5th gear waaaay to long. I'm cruising going 65mph and it won't shift into 6th sometimes for 20+seconds and I am on level terrain.

This is completely normal. It's just what you have to live with by choosing an automatic transmission.
And I agree, I don't think it actually serves any useful purpose. It's irritating and needlessly wastes extra gas.

It happens to me too. Sometime it holds in 5th gear for a good couple of miles even on flat after downhill. It is annoying and we have to live with it, So yes i change it Snow to make it shift to 6th again. Sometime i was even driving 80mph in 5th.

Do y'all really find this offensive that the car holds 5th gear for XX amount of time that YOU think is unnecessary? I'm pretty sure our ECU's aren't so careless to do something that is inappropriate. And fuel consumption between the two gears (5 and 6) for the seconds (or a minute or two) is very negligible. It's an AUTOMATIC transmission. It's there to make your life easier, and it's doing just that, except you're bothered by the gear is it in for short amounts of time...
