Exclamation 2008 Lexus IS 350- Need some Advice

Im new to this forum, so go easy on me lol Im 21 years old and drive an 08 IS350. I bought the car with 31k CPO from a local dealer a few years ago. It just turned 90k miles and I need some maintaince advice... Every oil change, brake job, tire change, EVERYTHING has been done at the same dealer since day one. They have recently advised me that I need to have the timing belt changed. The dealer suggests this be done every 5 years or 90K, this job is priced at $1400.00 from Lexus. Im a strong believer in dealer maintanaince because I think it helps the resale value to have the proper paperwork and dealer log info. I have recently listed the car for sale, but either need to sale it quick or have it fixed? Opinions? Im a proud Lexus owner and love my car! Are there any alternatives? The only reason the car is listed for sale is because it is getting close to 100k in miles, so I figured if I wanted any money back out of it then I needed to go ahead and let it go...

How much do you want to sell the car for?

"timing belt"
This is your first clue to find a new dealer, or even better, a reliable mechanic. The 2nd Gen IS does not have timing belt, it has a chain and doesn't need maintenance replacement. There was a TSIB for some cars where the chain was noisy due to insufficient oil getting to it, and this should be done through the extended power train warranty. If you are out of that, then again, a good independent mechanic is the way to go for this repair.

Like people are saying your dealer is a retard. We having timing chains, and you dont really ever have to do any maintenance changing unless it fails. And it does not fail at 90k, tell your dealer to go change their gasket between his work chair and his desk )))

I also have a 2008 350... According to the maintenance schedule that came with manual, only the SC needs a timing belt change at 90k miles. As others have said, the IS has a timing chain and not a belt.

Wow real criminals...you should let them try and change it and see what they actually are doing. Also IMO I wouldn't sell it just because it's close to 100k that car has a lot left in it at least another 100k more to go

Ok, basically it boils down to the dealership was gonna rip you off. There is NO timing belt in a 2IS to replace. The timing CHAIN in a 2IS does not require routine maintenance, as it is within a sealed portion of the motor that is lubed my the engine oil. What you should look at replacing would be the accessory belt, which is a $40 part and should require 1-2 hrs MAX labor.

Side note, do you know if the water pump has been replaced yet?

I would confront your service adviser and ask him what kind of BS he's trying to pull. There is no timing belt and the serpentine belt is at most a $200 job (plenty of people on here have changed it themselves with a $40 part and 30 minutes of labor). I would ask him to provide the documentation of exactly what it is your $1400 was going to go towards, and then contact Lexus corporate. What a scam!

I'd request for a new adviser at a minimum.

When I go into a dealer, I work with one adviser and one adviser only. And I always establish that I know the schedule maintenance, what I can do myself and how I'm aware of TSIB's. That way they won't even try to pull BS on me.
