So I have had the nasty odor on my cars repeatedly. It's the evaporator core. My solution, and it has to be reapplied, is to use one of the following:
http://www.autogeek.net/1z-einszett-...freshener.html
http://www.autogeek.net/1z-klima-cle...sy-to-use.html
Essentially the first one is a foam that cleans out the core. The second one is a fogger that does the same, but not as effective. I like both, but the second one is so easy to use.
Some other things you can do to ensure the odor is eliminated is by turning off the AC 5 minutes to your destination. If the core is dry, mold and fungus cannot grow. You could also turn up the heat, set the circulation to fresh, and let this run with your windows open for 15 minutes. This particular method fries the mold.

Dealer vacuum my carpet when I change oil there.
A very good way to remove odor is to buy charcoal. Google it and u will fine charcoal sold to remove odor. I was cheap so I bought the one put inside the shoes overnight. Jus leave them in the car and my car is odorless. Best part is charcoal is reusable. Just put them under the sun for a few hours and it will work ver well again.
