Default Is this a defective tire?

Good morning,

I could use some advice.

I bought some tires and they were shipped UPS. They arrived really dirty, but other then that they looked ok. I wiped off the dirt and took them to the dealership for installation. I was a little disappointed the dealership didn't clean them after mounting (but it wasn't a huge deal).

Anyway, after installation we immediately noticed a very symmetrical band on one tire (we wouldn't have seen it prior to the installation because of the way the tires were bundled together for shipment). The band goes around almost the entire tire, but you can see there are areas where the band doesn't exist (above the E in Michelin for example). The first photo probably doesn't do it justice because I had to turn the flash off, but I added another one that might be more telling.

However, since I didn't buy the tires (at the dealership) I drove it home and cleaned them all with Meguiar's and Black Magic (with the hope that the band would disappear as well). The band didn't disappear with the rest of the imperfections, and it's only this 1 tire that has issues. I'm curious what all of you think.

Thanks for your feedback.

It looks a bit worse than my crappy phone picture (but when I turned on the flash I couldn't see anything but the led flash). It's kinda frustrating that it's only on one tire. I already have people asking ... what's with the gray ring on your tire. lol.

Regardless, I respect your opinion. Thanks for your feedback.

I used some Meguiar's and then tried some Black Magic. Didn't seem to help. I could try Armor All as well, but it appears to be more than simply a cosmetic issue..or it's a cosmetic issue that's in-correctable with tire cleaner/dressing?

...unless you think Armor All tire products have an advantage over others?

Thanks for your feedback.

Who ever (whatever) was prep'ing the tire after it came out of the mold was a bit over zealous and scalped a tiny bit more than usual off the tire. So long as you cannot see the tire sidewall plies through the remaining rubber, then you are OK, and it's just a very minor cosmetic anomaly.

If you aren't having any vibrations, abnormal noise or pulling to the left or right while driving in a straight line, the tires should be ok. I think its a cosmetic thing. Did they come shipped in boxes or strapped? It could just be straps rubbing on them.

If it bothers you that much, I'd say get them exchanged. Good luck!

They came strapped, but the weird thing is the straps went across the tire, but the ring actually goes almost completely around the diameter of the tire, which makes me think there is something wonky going on.

Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it.

That would drive me nuts...

Even if it is only cosmetic, I would try and get it exchanged.

If Black Magic didn't correct it, I doubt highly that Armor All will do any better. The Black Magic is made to restore faded bumpers.

Last resort... +1 on the Sharpie fix

Thanks for the feedback; Glad to know I'm not the only one it drives nuts. It actually goes almost completely around the tire (with a few gaps like shown in the picture) yet it's almost completely symmetrical.

I only drove it one day after I got it and I had numerous people ask me what's up with the grey halo on one of my tires. ;-)

I have contacted the re-seller. I'm not sure what they will say, but considering these are the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport and people are asking me about them (and where I got them) it might be in everyone's best interest for a replacement.

According to your picture, tire does not look brand new.
If you got a good deal don't worry about it.
Get your tires swap (inside out)?

Gosh I sure hope they are new. If you look at the second one you can see they still have the side nubs as well....

I know this isn't the most exciting thread, but I was told by the re-seller to try a Brillo pad and if that doesn't work they will look at getting it swapped out.

I'll update the thread just in case anyone else has this issue someday.
