Default Manual Transmission TSB

Has anyone had the TSIB performed for the manual IS? I had a few questions about it, if anyone can help me out.

1) What kind of "noise" was the car making prior to the transmission/clutch being changed, and how often?

2) What are the major (mechanical) differences of the new transmission/clutch that they installed?

3) What differences did you fell after driving the car with the new transmission/clutch?

I would like to get this done (60K miles on current, why not?) but would obviously like to know more about it. PM your email if anyone would like a copy of the TSIB

Thanks a lot

I haven't had it done yet, but I am planning on it pretty soon.

1. The noise is hard to describe, but it's like a loud chatter/whirring sound when releasing the clutch in gear. Mine has done it maybe 4-5 times, the last time was about 2 weeks ago, and it was pretty bad.

2. The major difference is that a sprung clutch disc is being installed. Also if you have an 06-08, you will get the updated shifter mechanisms used in the 09+, including a counter-weight on the forward/aft movement of the shifter. The transmission itself is different in some way too, though I haven't been able to verify what is different from the normal 09-12 MT. Possibly just what is needed to use the sprung disc, or possibly some other internal changes.

3. Most people report a nicer shift feel after doing it, however I would only expect that if you have an 06-08, as the 09+ already has the updated shifter pieces.

The '06-'08 models came with an unsprung clutch disk? WOW! The engagement must be rough.

ive heard my car make the noise that your describing. but the dealer is telling me they have to keep the car and try it for as long is it takes until they hear the noise. what if it takes 2 weeks, they have to keep my car for 2 weeks??

i have an 07, so i guess they would be changing the transmission to this "updated" one. also, can u briefly tell me the difference between a sprung and unsprung clutch, in lamens terms? lol

the tsb doesnt specify VINs so im assuming all MTs qualify (assuming they make noise)

All 06-12 models have an unsprung clutch. They use a dual-mass flywheel instead. It's not rough.

All 06-11 IS250 MT's quality, possibly even 12's.

All 06-12 models have an unsprung clutch. After the TSB, it would have a sprung disc.

Correct, your dealer will need to confirm the noise.

I had mine done a few months ago. While some of the noisiness went away, there is no improvement in clutch engagement or shifter feel. :-(

Probably not. If you aren't having a problem, there is nothing for them to fix.

Since you have an 09, I wouldn't have expected any other result.
