Default Oil Change = Reduced MPG

So I changed my oil recently and instantly saw a drop in MPG. City MPG has droped from an average of 17-19 to 14-17 mpg. I cant even get past 28 on the highway. I think it may be because i put 7qts as opposed to the recomended 6.6. I used 5W-30 Mobile 1 Full Synthetic on my previous change and this one as well. and thoughts?

^That would help tremendously lol, i know firsthand haha

I thought you're supposed to use a full 7qts, if you install a new filter.

were you using something else before? (i.e. not 5W-30)?

Too much oil in the crank case if you ask me. Have you checked your dipstick? Oil quantity will most certainly cause variance in MPG.

I think it's pretty normal. I've changed lots of oil on my car and the mileage always dips after the oil change. I've observed that mileage improves close the next oil change though.

I used the same oil as my last with the exception of the filter.

Weather? Driving distance? Traffic? I'd say it's hard to compare just one or two tanks of gas and say any one particular factor (oil change) is affecting your MPG's. The only recommendation is to check your dipstick and make sure it's not overfull. Otherwise, it could be any number of factors completely unrelated to your oil change.

Too much oil, I wouldn't call 6.6 quarts a recommended number either, that's the proper capacity. As far as MPG, drain some of the oil and see, overly full engine oil can be harmful to your engine, or so I've been told. Better safe than sorry, I'd drain some out.

I would check the level, overfilled is not good for the engine.

If it were a driving habit issue the results would be consistant as my driving habits would be a constant in this equation. I actually drive pretty conservatively.

Il check the dip stick. I doubt conditions change that much after a 15 minute oil change. I changed my tires a week prior as well to a higher rating tire so i guess both are directly affecting my MPG. But 14/15 mpg in city is way too low. I would of got a jeep if i wanted that.

Driving habbit weather you think or not. I filled mine up to 7qt sometime and there no difference in MPG. Fill up your gas tank and take a 10min drive on the HW and you'll get your 25mpg+.

Too much oil is worse then not enough oil. There is a 1 qt difference between low and full... MAKE SURE when you do your dipstick it hits the bottom notch and not the top, then you are PERFECT oil range.

DRAIN A BIT OF OIL>

My driving habits did not change over the course of a 15 minute oil change. If i had a heavy foot before then i had a heavy foot after(which is not the case) so my mpg would of been the same.

I always reset my meter to see how effecient my commute is and i do try to conserve gas when i drive which is why i noticed the drop and made a point to post on here.
