Default 2007 Lexus IS 350 Problems and Questions

I have a 2007 Lexus IS 350. I have had a problem with it since I bought it last year. When my gas level gets below 1/3 of a tank, my vehicle makes a horrible droning noise and my driving performance is affected by intermitant sputtering and lack of acceleration. When the gas level is anywhere above 1/3 of a tank, the car drives like a dream. I bought the car from a Toyota dealer in Indiana and it has never been in an accident. It has 40,000 miles on it and I have run nothing but premium gas in it since I acquired it. I have taken the car to 3 mechanics and 1 Lexus dealer and no one can tell me whats wrong with it, but all 4 establishments witnessed the issue at hand, and all have said that there is a problem with it, but no one can pinpoint exactly whats wrong. Could it be a broken gas line inside the tank? Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Also, I am considering purchasing a set of vossen 20" VVS CV3's and was wondering if they will fit without having to modify anything on the car? Will 20" rims fit cleanly without rubbing when I turn? I have never put rims on any vehicle I have owned, so I am quite ignorant when it comes to any type of aftermarket modifications. Would I have to lower it? Any input on both of these matters would be of great help!!!

Matt

Post like this makes me afraid for my car as well. I just bought an 07 350 from an acura dealership in PA. Drove it down and didn't have any issues. I'm interested in seeing if anybody knows whats going on. Good luck bud!

Check and see if the recalls were done on it. There were several on the 350

sounds like the fuel pump is worn. Or you might have debis trapped at the bottom of the tank and clogging of the in-tank filter.. Thats my guess.

Might be fuel pump, without the hydrostatic pressure of a more-full tank, it might be struggling to push gas to the engine.

Yeah, i did have a lexus tech drive the car when i first discovered the problem last year...that was before i realized that the problem only occurs with 1/3 of a tank of gas or less...after i narrowed it down to a gas issue...i took it to a trusted mechanic and he said the 350 has two seperate bays inside the gas tank and there are more than one fuel line inside the tank....one of them could be broke...but it could also be anything from gas lines...to sediment...to a fuel filter...to the fuel pump...but the last post sounds the most promising....i might suggest the "hydrostatic pressure and fuel pump" idea to him and see what he says...thanks man!

Why? This is the first time I've seen this reported. Plenty more posts on cars in the 100k+ mileage with little or no issues. Go check out the Beamer forums and you'll likely see a LOT more posts about issues with their cars. There's a reason Lexus is at the tops of the reliability charts year after year.

I've had this problem since i bought the car with 33,000 miles on it...it currently has 43,000....but i'm sure it can be fixed...i needed to narrow it down before i take it in for work to be done...when i took it burdick lexus they wanted to put $3,300 worth of exhaust work into it...i knew it wasnt the exhaust...it wasn't an ongoing problem EVERY time i drove the car....i don't trust this lexus dealership at all...

That's an issue with your gas tank. It's either gunk in the tank that clogs the filter or something in there. I had the same issue with a Honda I bought used. My tank had float crap in it. Once the gas level was low enough it covered the filter and caused the car to stall. 6 hours, a 12 pack and flush kit later it ran like a champ.

This sounds most plausible~ I've known ppl who've put all kinds of crap in their gas tank BESIDES JUST GAS thinking it'll improve mpg/improve emissions/add hp/all kinds of reasons~ I know a guy who put unglazed ceramic beads in his benz thinking all sorts of reasons, cost him BIG MONEY to replace his entire fuel delivery system from tank to injectors...

Could it be water or moisture in the gas tank, if I am not mistaken gas is heavier than water so when the tank is full or above half the gas will be at the bottom of the tank and the water floats on top of the gas. Just a thought
