Botched Oil Change
Hello CL Family,
I have a have a question for you all. If I take my car to the stealership for an oil change and they partially strip some thread from my oil pan bolt or the drain hole itself, is it acceptable for any mechanic to use thread tape to fix the problem if the threads weren't stripped that bad?
Thanks,
Marty

I've read several cases this happening, and the dealer DID NOT cover/fix. They've claimed the threads were worn or damaged previously. Saying they wear/strip over time by over tightening, removing, etc. I'm seriously considering doing my own oil changes from now on.
Also, many Lexus service writers are starting to put "Customer refused recommended service" in the history log if you don't buy into their expensive scheduled maintenance. **** that *****.

who ever did the oil change, is not a mechanic. he is a lube tech and that tape is to help it not leak (so you can leave and they dont have to replace your pan). if the dealership did strip the pan, i would have them fix it.. this is why i do my own oil changes.

If you continually go to the same people to get your oil changed, I'd take it up with them, if not, it's most likely the last person to do the oil change that is at fault (or the person before that). If it was overtightened last time or the time before, it may have been then that the threads were damaged, but they just came out this time. Using something like an oversized plug, or thread tape is a temporary measure just to get you going. Next oil change, you will likely need a new oil pan. Proving who is at fault can be difficult unless you always go to the same place to get your oil changed.

Why is this phrased as a hypothetical question? Is it hypothetical, or did a Lexus dealer actually damage your car?

I'm not sure how people strip their oil pans anyways, does anyone really think it needs to be that tight to seal? Really?
