But then that would make led headlights tacky, after all vw motors (Audi and porsche) has many models with led headlights

LED headlights are the new generation of headlights, most cars have them now, it's made for safety reasons especially in Europe. VW, Mercedes, Lexus, Land Rover, and other European and Asian cars have them.
EDIT: I never said "copycatting", I was just referring about the LED lights. Most of the aftermarket headlights I've seen looks cheap IMO, because it's just cheap looking, not because it's a copy of another car maker.
