Default Stupid ? Whats the difference between parking/city lights and drl

I've been searching and I see there's 9005 bulbs for drl/high beams and 168 bulbs for the parking lights.
My question is, are they both always on with drls? I looked at them quickly today and I saw both on.

drl = high beam in low intensity (parking lights off)
parking lights = turns on when your low beam turns on (drl off)

Just FYI, when your DRLs are on you can still click your headlight stalk one position and have the parking/city lights and DRLs on at the same time, not that it makes a big difference.

This might help. I've posted this several times, going back to 2007, wow!

Ok, now I have a stupid question... As mine has HID lights, the post above looks like the low and high beam are in the main single headlight projector and only the dtr is in the secondary smaller headlight.

If this is correct, couldn't I change out my DRL to a matching white LED, without losing highbeams? I thought you always gave up highbeams and I didn't want to do that...

^ The high beam is the DRL (in pre-2011 HID headlights). I think you're looking at the schematic wrong.

I guess the screen shot saying Low/HI beam with HID and just Low beam without HID both pointing to the main projector is wrong or at best misleading? Not wisecracking, just havn't had mine long enough to open it up to see...

The low beam and high beam are one and the same for HID-equipped models. The HID low beam is simply the normal light emitted from the lamp with a louver in front of it. When you queue up your high beams, the louver lifts and unblocks the full output of the bulb.

This should clarify things.

The parking lights are very small halogen bulbs that poke into the reflector housing of the daytime running lights/high beams. I'm assuming you're truly talking about the parking lights and not the DRLs/high beams, which is one larger bulb (that serves both functions) and is next to the low beams.

I made this a while ago for a similar thread:

1) Low beam (halogen or HID)
2) Parking light (smaller halogen bulb)
3) DRL/high beam (halogen)
4) Fog light (halogen)

So,in my case (HID'S) I should be able to replace the DRL's with LEDs and not affect my Highbeam... correct?

This is not correct because you can have your parking lights on without the low beams by clicking the headlight stock to the 2nd setting (parking light mode).

You will still have the bi-xenon high beam functionality that JavyLSU described to you, but you will lose your dedicated 9005 high beam. Because of that, your high beam output will be considerably less when switching to LED DRLs, so it's a tradeoff if you're willing to sacrifice that secondary high beam to have nice looking DRLs.
