Default What engine noises are normal? Will dealer charge me to diagnose?

Well, ever since I got an exhaust, I've been listening to my car more. I just noticed that standing in front of the car, I hear an intermittent sound. It's not the ticking sound that's normal. It almost sounds as if something on the engine is loose. I tried recording a video but the ticking sound is just louder but I can easily hear it in person. Describing the sound is kind of hard, but sounds like a washing machine during the rinse cycle lol. It does the sound/noises for a few seconds, stops, and does it again over and over at random times. My friend with an '07 IS250 had some strange noise a few months ago and the dealer ended up replacing his water pump at 30k miles. Not sure if his was making the same sound. Also, I have the start-up grind too. Would the dealer charge me to have the problem diagnosed or fixed? I'm out of the basic warranty but under the powertrain.

If the problem ends up being covered by warranty, they shouldn't charge you diagnosis. If it's not covered, then I'd expect them to charge you. If they don't, that would be very nice of them, but I would expect to pay if the problem isn't covered under your powertrain warranty.

Definitely take the car in. If you have the start-up grind, they're going to diagnose and fix that issue for free under the powertrain warranty. When you bring it in for this issue, I would also tell them about the sound you describe and your concern about it, and ask them to check it out. In my experience, if a dealership is already doing a major job like the cam gear TSIB, diagnosing an issue in the same general area shouldn't cost you anything. If the issue ends up not being covered by powertrain, sure technically they could warranty the TSIB and then charge you diagnostics for the other issue, but I doubt they would unless diagnostics were somehow extremely involved.

yes they will charge you a diagnostic fee, at my local dealer it is $120. They will charge you the fee even if they do not find anything wrong with your car. However, it is waived if you decide to do the repair. Doing the repair could be under warranty or either out of your own pocket.

The start up grind should be covered under the power train so I would take it in for that ASAP and you can probably just ask about the other noise while your there. My dealer is really good and would 99% just take a look at it for free since its there for something else anyways.

The fan makes a very distinct noise, I'm sure if it was that we wouldn't be sitting here trying to figure it out. My diagnostic costs 120 and they waive the fee if you decide to have any work done found in the inspection. Frankly I would pay it if I had the slightest concern for the product life of my vehicle. It's worth more than the time and effort it would undoubtedly cost you down the road.
